Oct 20th - 24th

Friday, October 24, 2008 We are leaving for Cape Town, we will try to update as soon as possible. Wednesday, October 22, 2008 Our topic today was Islam.  It is sad for me to admit, but fear comes to mind when I think about Muslims.  What comes to mind for you?  Our media has influenced my attitude greatly towards them and I feel that it has made most of the Christians in our country develop a negative attitude.  One of the more interesting things that I learned was...

Friday, October 17, 2008 Today we celebrated the 21st anniversary of the training team.  That means that 42 teams like ours have gone through a 6-month training program.  There were 230 people in total, many former trainees, who came out for the celebration. Johanna and I were the headwaiters.  It was a nice job, because we got to tell the tables when they could go to the buffet line.  The food was great, though many of us did not feel quite as well the next day. ...

Oct 15th-16th

Thursday, October 16, 2008 Today was as normal a day as any here.  If I told you about it…you would be bored.  So we will tell you about a funny moment from life here.  We have a Korean pastor, who is a leader on base and nobody knows how to say his name, so we call him Pastor and he loves it.  His Enligh is becoming better, but he still says things like, “please porn me if you have any questions” when he really wants you to “phone him.”  Today someone went...

Tuesday, October 14, 2008 Last night we watched the movie Ana and the King.  It painted an extreme picture of two different cultures.  One being British and the other the Monarchy of Siam (present day Thailand).  It was an excellent movie to discuss cultural assumptions and bias.  We also took a cultural bias survey, which closely resembled a personality profile.  I (Adam) have really enjoyed our conversations thus far, because the more we talk, the more I am able to...

Another great day in Mission Mobilization.  Most of my day was spent working on our projects.  We have been divided into teams by country, I (Jo) am on team Myanmar and Adam is on Saudi Arabia.  We are doing 15 minute presentations about the country including costumes, displays, food and prayer points for the country.  Myanmar is mostly Buddhist and Christians are heavily persecuted.  The cyclone has allowed people into the country and God is really working that...

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 and Wednesday, October 8, 2008

This week we are experience and learning a lot through meals.  Today at lunch, we ate at a Darfur refugee camp in Sudan.   We ate lunch in our field and it consisted of 2 pieces of bread and a ration of water.  This afternoon we had a Chinese tea and practiced using chopsticks and did games with small candies…thanks to our previous experience, both of our teams dominated.  The evening we ate Mexican chili with cornbread, but we question the origin of...

Thus far, we have absolutely loved the beginning of Mission’s Mobilizing.  Last night we began with an illustration regarding a fire and how few people went to put it out.  It helped paint the picture of how many of us view Missions.  Jo and I have been assigned as team leaders for certain groups.  Jo’s team is Myanmar (formally Burma) and mine is Saudi Arabia.  We are responsible for conducting presentations on our country at the end of the week.  We have...

What a weekend!  It has been a busier weekend than we anticipated…with many brush fires, a trip to the doctor, going to a rugby game, a market and catching up with things here.  Let me (Jo) start with Thursday evening.  There were some fires down the road, so our team went to help put them out.  Fire trucks don’t come and we are the fire fighters.  We fight fires with minimal water and a lot of manpower.  Manpower consists of plastic rakes that are used to...
