Laurel and Amy met when they were in college at UNCG. They were both members of the College Democrats and were good friends for a couple of years before they got together. On their first anniversary, Laurel asked Amy, "assuming we could, would you marry me?" and she said yes and Amy asked if Laurel would and she said yes. Later on, Laurel made it clear that that was actually a proposal!
Our wedding does not involve any paperwork like the marriage between a man and a woman would. Unfortuately this means we will not be allowed the same privileges that couples who legally marry receive, including health care benefits, property rights, hospital visitation, etc. However, our commitment is no less real and meaningful to us and when given the chance to legally unite, we will do so. Until then we hope that opposite-sex couples sincerely appreciate their privilege. We know that those who truly love and support us will be present at our ceremony.
