Andrew and Alyssa

Our Story

How Alyssa and Andrew became the Meddskys.

Boy Meets Girl

Boy Meets Girl

On October 17, 2003 a fierce three-day storm ripped through the Lower Mainland breaking records with more than 100 millimetres of rain in 24 hours. Cars were abandoned with water up to the windows, malls were closed due to flooding, and Andrew stepped off the plane at YVR for his first visit to Vancouver.

As Andrew buzzed up to the Butler-McPhee apartment where he would be crashing for a few days, Alyssa caught the door behind him. True love was not declared during the elevator ride, but a few days later Alyssa ended up sitting across the table from Andrew at the Yaletown Brewing Company and sparks flew.

You've Got Mail

You've Got Mail

Andrew and Alyssa began a modern courtship via email. Andrew realized that "Hey" subject lines weren't the way to Alyssa's heart and so he tried to impress her with gems like "Regard my poor demoralized mule" and "Meaty + Poker."

But man and woman cannot live by email alone and Alyssa and Andrew supplemented their daily emails with trips between Toronto and Vancouver. As cross-country sweethearts they took advantage of these visits to show each other parts of their world. Alyssa took Andrew to Seattle, Salt Spring Island, and across British Columbia, Alberta, and her beloved Saskatchewan. Andrew took Alyssa to Ottawa, Kingston, Montreal, and Niagara-on-the-Lake.

In early 2006, Andrew moved to Lotusland. It didn't take long for him to adjust to the west coast lifestyle and soon he was flying on float planes, eating sushi, and shopping for Gore-Tex jackets. (All true!)

In May 2007, Andrew and Alyssa bought a condo in East Vancouver. As they explored the cafes and shops on Commercial Drive and mixed with the locals, they knew they had found a good place to call home. Andrew and Alyssa love entertaining their friends and family whether it be guests from afar or an impromptu dinner with local friends.

The Road Ahead

The Road Ahead

On October 19, 2007, Andrew asked Alyssa to marry him and she said yes.

Andrew proposed at Queen Elizabeth Park, which is a special place for the two of them. On one of Andrew's early trips to Vancouver, Alyssa and Andrew went to the park for a celebratory dinner at Seasons restaurant. Later, when they lived in the house off Cambie Street, they would often walk up to the park in the evenings to watch the sun go down over the city.

On this particular night there wasn't a sunset, only driving rain. It probably wasn't what Andrew had in mind, but the monsoon-style rain kept visitors away from park making it a very personal, private moment.

Andrew and Alyssa celebrated with champagne and dinner at Parkside restaurant, an overnight stay at the Listel Hotel, and pumpkin spice lattes and the crossword in bed the next morning.
