Christine's story...
The date I suppose, was Oct 17, 1999. It was the night that the F1 (Malaysian Grand Prix) race was broadcasted internationally from Sepang, Malaysia for the first time. I didn't care that much about F1, really... I just needed to get away from my roommate! Our friend (Russel Gracey) who is an F1 fanatic knew that I was from Malaysia. So he invited me over his dorm residence (Cody Hall) to watch the race. Without my knowledge, he had also invited Andy. Apparently, he told Andy that there is a Malaysian girl in the building and knowing that Andy's parents are also from Malaysia, he thought that he'd ask. At this point, they had been drinking all night, and Andy had just tagged along our friend to the lounge area where the TV is located. I don't really remember meeting this Asian guy who was supposed to be Andy. I just remembered that our friend showed up with a few of his friends, and there was this drunk dude who laid on the couch the entire night... passed out (That dude was Andy).
Andy's story...
**Burp~** Yeah, I saw a girl that night... She was HOT!! **Burp~**
So after that unofficial first meeting, Christine came over to Cody Hall quite a bit. She knew all of Andy's friends who lived to the right and left of Andy's room, but she has never talked to the guys in room 505 (Andy's room). One day as she was strolling down the hallway on the 5th floor of Cody Hall, she heard a nice beat coming from room 505. She said to herself, "Oh, I've got to find out the name of this song!" So she casually walked into room 505 and asked the dude that was sitting at his desk for the name of the song. Andy and Christine were techno geeks who favored eurotrash type songs (Christine still does) and that's how she remembered of their first meeting. She's not sure if she ever got the name of the song, but it was probably something trashy like "I'm a Barbie girl" by Aqua or something like that...
Fast forward to Winter 2000 semester, Andy and Christine were both in Toronto for the Christmas break and they had met up once and talked over the phone quite a bit during this break. When they went back to school after the break, they had thought that it would be great to gather everyone up for a night out on the town, a bar crawl or something... So on Saturday, January 15, 2000, Christine thought that it was going to be a fun night out with all their friends, but no one had mentioned if they were going to go out that night at all. At about 4 or 5pm that day, she called Andy to see if anybody was going to show up for the night and he said that he didn't think so. So Christine said, "Heck, whatever.. we'll go out to have some fun anyway!" Andy, obviously, had no objections. She said "So what do you wanna do?" He said, "**garble garble** Uhh Ohh, I dunno..." She said "How about dinner at Mandarin Place and watch Man on the Moon at The Palace?" He said, "OK. Sure. See you at 6."
Little did Christine know, Andy had told everyone that it was going to be a date for the both of them. He had told his friends NOT to show up for the night and he had spent all day shaving his head (yes, he was a baldy before, and a HOT one too.. think Vin Diesel... *blush*blush*) and dressing up for the night. He even wore cologne!!!
So to Christine, it was a trap, but to Andy is was his little devilish plan so that they get to spend the night together!!!
So here you have it, here is how Andy and Christine met. Windsor may be small and invisible on the map of Canada (it is one of the busiest border cities in Canada), but this small little city brings back plenty of bittersweet memories to them. Christine misses the sunset and late night walks on the riverside, while Andy probably misses his binge-drinking, libation session the most with his buddies (I don't know, ask him yourself!).
Here's a picture of the Ambassador Bridge that Andy and Christine crossed ever so often when they lived 4 hours apart from each other when Christine was pursuing her Master's Degree at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Meanwhile, Andy was working back in Toronto, Canada. This is also the same bridge that thousands of trucks crossed back and forth US and Canada, which kept so many freshmen lying awake during their first few weeks at University because the dorms/residence were so strategically located right next to this bridge!!!
Who knew that such a small and stinky place (from the sulphur plant nearby) can bring so much memories? Sigh...
