Everybody loves gifts. Truth be told, the best gift we have been given is each other. We don't need much- and need for very little in the way of household items. If you are feeling like you want to share a present please consider the charity below, or one of the suggestions below.
Really though, we just want all of you to spend our wedding day togehter with us. You are our families and the family of friends that are so important to both of us, and knowing that the people that we care about most are all coming together for a celebration is the most exciting part.
This organization reaches out to children of all ages and their families, but goes far beyond just that: This organization recognizes the importance of family, of good parenting, the influence of a positive community amd the influence of positive role models, and how all of these factors translate into a child's education and the role they play as adults in their communities.
The Gus Bus: This program has four main goals:
To provide a free book bag exchange program containing high quality, culturally diverse children’s literature.
To increase the amount of time families spend reading together.
To educate parents on the importance of reading to their preschool children.
To teach parents and daycare providers appropriate reading techniques through activities on Gus the Bus.
These goals are accomplished through Gus the Bus, a mobile literacy component of the Reading Road Show. Gus is a custom equipped vehicle which serves the city of Harrisonburg and Rockingham and Page Counties.
Last year, Gus traveled 15,000 miles and made regular visits to over 40 sites.
As Gus visits local neighborhoods and daycare centers, up to twenty-five children and their parents can be onboard at once partaking in storytelling activities.
In 2006 & 2007 alone, The Gus Bus and The Reading Road Show’s literacy efforts have reached over 2,000 children in the Valley through regular visits to the following locations:
30 family daycare providers
11 daycare centers
20 pre-kindergarten classrooms
30 neighborhood sites
