Preparation and Altitude Information!

We want you to have a great time while you’re in Frisco! At 9,100 feet, the air pressure is 40% lower than at sea level, which should be taken seriously. Altitude can have serious effects for people who aren't used to it, but if you prepare properly you shouldn't have a problem. Please read the information below and make a conscious effort to drink water and take it easy. After all, this is vacation!

Altitude Sickness

Altitude Sickness

You may notice some strange things happening to you when at a higher elevation. Some people experience minimal symptoms of altitude sickness such as headaches, strange dreams, trouble sleeping, and shortness of breath. Try combating these symptoms by drinking a lot of water (8 or more cups a day), taking an over the counter medication for headache and avoiding caffeine or alcohol. If you should have more severe symptoms such as fatigue, vomiting, rapid heart beat, numb or tingling extremities, then it is time to slow down. Take an extra day to acclimate before doing that triathlon. Oxygen will help many of these symptoms and enable you to enjoy your trip. You can purchase oxygen from various companies or at local stores. If your symptoms should become extreme ,which would include fluid build-up in lungs, decreased mental status, inability to walk, or shortness of breath at rest, a doctor should be consulted immediately. These severe symptoms can be fatal and may require you to go to a lower elevation.

If you feel that the altitude may be an issue or have a medical history of heart, lung or other problem, talk with your doctor. There are some medications that can be prescribed as well as some natural treatments for altitude.

Dehydration

Hydration is key at high altitudes and dry climates especially if you are participating in physical activities. It sounds simple but is often overlooked. The dry mountain air increases your respiratory rate due to lower oxygen content, which can be made greater with alcohol consumption. Alcohol and caffeine intake should be used with caution. Keep a bottle of water with you.

Sunburn

Never underestimate the sun at higher elevations. Always wear sunscreen and don’t forget your sunglasses. You are more than a mile closer to the sun than you are at sea level and there is less atmosphere to block out the sun’s rays. Sunburns occur much faster at higher altitudes.

What to pack

The best suggestion for packing in the summer is to layer. Pack multiple layers as the evenings are cooler and any rain will cool things down. Be sure to plan for all types of weather as summers in Frisco have significant temperature changes as well as plenty of rain.
