Destination Wedding: Cape Town, South Africa

Few places on the entire planet are as exotic and surreal as South Africa. Cape Town itself is the perfect apex of its multifaceted intrigue with an oceanic Mediterranean climate perfect for destination weddings. From a “blooming” wedding among 6,000 floral species in the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens to the intimate setting of a luxury resort like Cape Grace on the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, couples can wed under the awning of sun and sky. From luxurious to laid-back, no matter what type of destination wedding you imagine, Cape Town will surpass your expectations.

Popular Destination Wedding Locales

Cape Grace - Perfect for smaller weddings, this hotel is plush, elegant, and over-the-top. Perfect for a princess and her prince, couples can access the private library and lounge for afternoon wine tastings or take advantage of the free tours around the cape. For destination weddings that have 30-40 guests, Cape Grace can accommodate for the ceremony, reception, and honeymoon. They also have an amazing “functions team” which will assist you from afar with arrangements for flowers, photographers, ministers, décor, music, hair, and makeup.

Winelands - From the stunning wine cave of Backsberg Estate in Paarl to the mountain backdrop of the Clouds Estate in Stellenbosch, there are dozens of amazing venues in Cape Town Winelands to impress. Whether you want a boutique winery with off-site accommodations or you want to stay in a 200-year old estate with rooms right off the reception patio, there is a breathtaking assortment of venues to hand-pick from.

City Venues - Couples who want the utmost in convenience for their guests won’t have to look far in Cape Town. From the Radisson Blu Hotel Waterfront in the City Bowl to Ikhaya Lodge in Dunkley Square, the accommodations are luxurious and the bistros, cafes, and nightclubs are just around the corner. DW guests need only to travel 10-15 minutes to see popular tourist attractions like Table Mountain and the V&A Waterfront.

Cape Town Destination Wedding Requirements

Since you have to have an authorized marriage officer to get married in South Africa, its best to consult with your resort about South African wedding officers in your area. On the wedding day it will be required that you bring passports and any divorce decrees and death certificates to present to your assigned wedding officiant. There is a minimum of two required witnesses and the marriage must be conducted in a church or a building used for religious purposes.

Cape Town Marriage Locale Requirements

You can get married in a public office or a private house, but it must have open doors in the building. (No underground marriages allowed here.) If you are hoping for an outdoor wedding, you must, at some point, perform an indoor ceremony to seal the deal legally.

After the ceremony, the marriage officer will immediately provide you with an unabridged marriage certificate. He or she will be responsible for submitting that document to the Department of Home Affairs. You’ll be issued the complete marriage certificate (mailed to your home) within 6-8 weeks.
