Honeymoon Destination: Mackinac Island, MI

View of the Mackinac Island in Michigan. Sunset sky, over a body of water.

Time changes everything, except for Mackinac Island of course. This Michigan honeymoon getaway is known for its timeless Victorian beauty, its transportation (guests and locals are limited to a pair of walking shoes, a bicycle, or a horse carriage since 1898), and its peaceful aura. Honeymooners can easily lose themselves between picnicking in Mackinac Island State Park, relaxing at the Lilac House Spa, or snuggling up inside one of the bungalows along the gorgeous sparkling shore.

Regardless of the itinerary, couples who honeymoon here will get not only a vacation, they will also get a meter by which to set their lives: uncomplicated.

Popular Honeymoon Attractions in Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island State ParkOpen year-round and free to enter, this state park is among the top ten in the world. Sacred to the Ojibwa and Odawa Great Lakes Indian tribes who inhabited this island upon its founding, it accounts for 80% of the entire island’s land population. With cars banned since the late 1800′s, the colors, rockeries, shoreline, vistas, and sweeping views seem more crisp and vibrant in ways that only nature unfettered can supply. The high limestone bluffs and thick boreal forest are the perfect place to lose yourself.

Arch RockGetting to this geological wonder is half the fun. Choose between hiking in, taking a horse carriage to the lookout point, or even chartering a boat to take you. What is Arch Rock? It is one of nature’s most convincing magic tricks. Imagine a natural rock bridge situated 149 feet above the Straits of Mackinac and through the lookout from the land view, the entire body of water appears to be suspended in midair. It is awe-inspiring and romantic.

Haunts of MackinacThere is nothing that inspires romance more than a good old fashioned scare. The Haunts of Mackinac tour encourages honeymooners to get a little closer and that’s never a bad thing. A surprisingly historic tour, you and your love will learn about the history and legends surrounding this quaint little town.

Amateur ghost hunters may be intrigued to find that Mission Point Resort is one of the tour’s stops, which was featured on Sci-fi Channel’s Ghost Hunters. However, don’t worry if you scare easily. The entire island town is so cheery and gorgeous that once you depart, you won’t feel fear, it’s just pure fun.

Mackinac Island Butterfly HouseEveryone deserves a little magic on their honeymoon, and Mackinac’s Butterfly House is that hidden treasure. Like little fireworks fluttering around your body, there are hundreds of varieties and colors to discover. Friendly butterflies often land on stoppers-by, but the tranquility of the space alone is sure to knock a few ticks off the blood pressure.

Where to Stay

From gorgeous stone mansions like the Inn at Stonecliffe to cozy lodging like the Main Street Inn and Suites, couples really do have the pick of the litter when it comes to accommodations. Simply decide if you want to be on the water, in the heart of downtown, or somewhere private.

Best Time to Visit

June through September are the most popular months to visit Mackinac. However, the mid-summer months are best for outdoor adventure. With moderate temperatures, often topping out in the low 70′s, the cooler mornings call for layers and coffee and the warmer afternoons call for chilled wine on any veranda you can find.
