Honeymoon Destination: Minnesota

From sweeping prairies to unbridled wilderness, Minnesota may be the Land of 10,000 Lakes, but don’t think you only get to pack a fishing pole; for a honeymoon that craves variety, this Midwestern gem has something different to offer every type of traveler. From the bustling urban appeal of the Twin Cities to the crystal clear lakes and basaltic lava formations of the Northwest, Minnesota has plenty of recreational and traditional vacation happenings to make it a strong contender for your first vacation as a married couple.

Twin Cities Means Double the Fun

The Mississippi River confluences at the crux of St. Paul and Minneapolis, which is a poetic symbol of their adjoining at the hip. The cities themselves feel like literal islands of industry due to the large bodies of water that surrounds and flow between the cities.

From lakes, creeks, rivers, waterfalls, and wetlands, the city has gorgeous scenery like the view from The St. Croix River, and is rich in parkland. A honeymoon must-do is to stroll down Grand Avenue in St. Paul. A historic strip of shopping and cafe, this avenue stretches for 25 blocks and can keep you shopping until you are dropping into one of their amazing street-side cafes.

In Minneapolis, catch a Twins game at Target Field or visit the Minneapolis Museum of Art to ogle over 4,000 years of world history as told through their 80,000 different pieces. If you want scenery in the city, go to The Lake of the Isles which is only 2.2 miles from the city center. Serene and perfect for summer sunsets, pack a lunch or pick up a cup of coffee and simply bask in the beauty of the waterfront view. For entertainment, The Orpheum Theater offers many Broadway hits as the Minnesota Orchestra is world-renown for their ability to master musical moments from classical to jazz.

Lake Superior

If you’ve never seen the ocean, you may not be able to tell the difference when spending your honeymoon aside Lake Superior. With grand bays of oceanic proportions, lazy stretches of pebble beach, and sunsets to set your hair on fire, this little slice of heaven in Northeast Minnesota has amazing resorts to try.

The Lutsen Resort is known for being the most romantic in the region. With cabin-inspired suites right on the beach, this hotel prides itself on having chilled champagne and gift baskets awaiting your arrival. There is also a spa on-site called WatersMeet Massage. For kayaking and hiking during the day, and a Jacuzzi tub with bubbles by night, the Lutsen will not disappoint.

The Larsmont Cottages in Two Harbors feels like a home away from home. With spacious one bedroom cottages on the water, couples can enjoy their own private whirlpool tub, stone-covered gas fireplace, and inset modern kitchen while snuggling up in their goose down comforters. If you want privacy, these cottages keep the world out and the love locked in.

When to Visit

May to September is the most beautiful time of the year here. While the summers can be hot and humid in the north, central Minnesota has beautiful temperatures in the mid to upper 80’s. Unless you are accustomed to frigid winters, avoid honeymooning here during their cold months as they commonly see below-freezing temps.
