It all started in July of 2003, which would be almost two months before Austin and Meghan would first meet. Austin was attending freshman orientation at Virginia Tech, and during one of the activities just so happened to sit in front of a few girls – Megan Ott and Kim Langford – and began chatting and exchanging pleasantries. After all the commotion was over, Austin, Megan and Kim went their separate ways and knew there was little chance that they would run into each other in the fall semester…
Austin and his new friend Brian Luley, whom he met in his freshman dorm just a few days before, were exploring West AJ before heading to grab a quick bite at West End. As they were leaving AJ, Austin – by chance – ran into Kim in the stairwell. Austin invited her to eat at West End, but having already had lunch she invited us up to her room instead. Austin would remember this room number and stop by for a visit with his sidekick Brian after lunch...
Upon entering the room after lunch, Austin immediately recognized Kim and Megan, but did not know the third girl in the room, Meghan Hall a friend from Megan and Kim’s high school. Meghan was rather quiet while Megan, Kim and Austin once again talked of all the excitement of being college freshmen. Before leaving, Austin made sure to get all three girls instant messenger screen names in order to stay in touch.
So let’s recap the events that led up to our meeting:
1. Austin randomly met Kim and Megan at his freshman orientation
2. Austin ran into Kim in the hallway during the first week and was fortunate to get invited up to her room
3. Meghan just so happened to be visiting Kim and Megan at the time that Austin stopped by
4. Austin got Meghan’s contact information, and pursued developing a friendship
Soon thereafter, Austin and Meghan discovered that they shared a class in McBryde 100 – Freshman Chemistry. This class is where Meghan, Austin and Brian would meet twice a week and share laughs, chemistry notes, and occasionally lunch. Although Austin and Meghan would never have another class together, they would remain close friends for the rest of freshman and sophomore year.
In the fall of junior year, Meghan and Austin began to hang out more and went on their first official date – Saw II at the New River Valley Mall. This was the start of a relationship that would officially begin on December 19, 2005 and carry through to this very day.
Austin knew that he wanted to propose to Meghan on their 3rd year anniversary in December of 2008. Austin and Meghan would go to dinner at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in Crystal City overlooking the skyline of Washington, DC. After dinner, Austin would propose to Meghan and she said YES!
