MA and Beca met at someone else's birthday party when they were 12 and 13, when MA still thought that was a big deal. Despite being completely opposite in nearly every imaginable way, they are really just sisters who found each other a little later than normal.
It is thanks to MaryAnn that Beca knows how to dress herself like a grown-up, no matter how often she chooses not to.

David is Martin's best and oldest friend, harking way back to their childhood in the Bay Area. They have constantly instilled in each other what it means to be a man, even across oceans and time.
Although in many regards they are as different as grey sea salt and sichuan peppercorns, he's the brother Martin never had, a man Martin respects and an unhinged goofball when the time comes.
He will keep the rings as warmly as we hold him and his wife in our hearts.
David e o melhor and mais antigo amigo do Martin, dos dias de criança em São Francisco. Os dois sempre ensinam um ao outro o que é ser homem, por cima de oceanos e tempo.

Thrown together by friends, Beca & Henry had an awkward but long-lasting relationship when they were fifteen. They have managed to not get rid of each other yet, despite breaking up (twice) and moving over 1000 miles away-- at least three times.
He's also a Rockstar, and not the videogame kind.

Sam is a gruff, sharp-tongued and utterly lovable Scot from the far North who is always ready to take an axe to a lie and keep conversations jumping over archipelagos of informative inanity. He's as generous with his time and company as he is with his beer, advice and meat-pies.
Sam and Martin are grumpy old men who love to laugh, and he is a vital part of Edinburgh being, and staying, one of Beca and Martin's homes. For this, they will always love him madly.
He's not only the sharpest tool in the shed, he's also the whetstone and the WD-40.

As an stylin' architect and grizzly mountain man, Patrick Geronimo is definitely the ladies' choice. He cuts a wicked rug, snowboards like a demon and loves a good bande dessiné.
He and Martin go way back, and their past is filled with whisky, women and the slow, smoky churn of midnight blues.
He's crossed the deserts bare, man, breathed the mountain air, man. He's been everywhere.

One of two friends from high school with whom Beca keeps in touch (the other is her husband, Eric): there are many, many reasons for this. Notably, Val has always been extraordinarily gifted at rationalizing any action Beca might choose to take, no matter how irrational.
She's the one in white, there (the others are Eric's sisters, Ashley and Vanessa, rad human beings in their own right).
