(Check out some great pictures of the historic chapel under "Photo Galleries")

A Post Chapel was first planned in the earliest days of Randolph Field, but considerable time elapsed before plans were firmed he original organ were removed. The architecture is unique among military chapels. Few chapels are as beautiful, and even fewer are located in so commanding a position relative to the rest of the base.

Fronting the main "Washington Circle", the chapel is laid out in the shape of a Lorraine cross with a striking ornate entrance. The Quartermaster Corps, in designing the chapel, deliberately planed to combine the exterior architecture of famous old San Antonio missions such as San Jose and Conception, with an interior, which is conventional Romanesque.

Looking at the exterior of the Chapel, it appears not to have been completed since the cupola on the right tower is missing. This is said to be a carryover from the old Spanish missions, for in those days there was a law exempting all incomplete buildings from taxation.

The 400 seat Chapel remains today largely as Vincent Falbo and Son originally built it with the exception of the memorial windows, and the present permanent altar which replaced a temporary one in 1947

.............................................................................................

"I ARISE from dreams of thee
In the first sweet sleep of night,
When the winds are breathing low,
And the stars are shining bright
I arise from dreams of thee,
And a spirit in my feet
Has led me -- who knows how? --
To thy chamber-window, sweet!

The wandering airs they faint
On the dark, the silent stream, --
The champak odors fall
Like sweet thoughts in a dream,
The nightingale's complaint,
It dies upon her heart,
As I must die on thine,
O, beloved as thou art!......"

~~Percy Bysshe Shelley
