How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story:
Adam and I were both dating other people and met one night at my friend’s restaurant. We were hooked from that moment. We became each others’ other half…honestly…it’s an incredible feeling to know within minutes that this is the one you want to spend the rest of your life with. I feel like we are twin souls…that we have known each other long before we met.

What was the theme | design inspiration for your wedding?
We are both “old souls”…with that said we were inspired to have a vintage looking wedding…we decided on the 50′s and 60′s style of Palm Springs as our inspiration. We really wanted our wedding to have a cocktail party “feel” for our friends to enjoy. We didn’t want it to feel like a wedding, but more of a celebration.

Adam and I both decided on The Riviera because of their Palm Springs history which was even noted in our retro Save the Dates and Invitations!

Tell us about the attire for both bride and groom:
Very classic. The men wore clean-lined simple tuxedos. I wore a long champagne colored gown by Anna’s Bridal with my grandmother’s brooch on the back. I then changed into a short bustled cocktail dress by Melissa Sweet for the reception. For both dresses I had 2 different vintage Stuart Weitzman shoes in honor of El Paseo Drive. I found one pair at a local vintage shop in Palm Springs!

Favorite design element of your big day:
I loved the hotel it really fit with our personalities…it was hard to mess up with anything when you had such a fabulous venue!

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding?
Not having any clue what the hotel would look like! I booked the venue site by drawings and fabric samples in an offsite location; not to mention we live in Portland and had limited times in our schedule to see how the hotel was coming along. However I knew within 20 minutes that I was taking the risk. I knew that if it was anything close to the drawings it would have to be the place, and it was!

What advice would you give to a couple planning their wedding?
Don’t get overworked or overwhelmed about the little things. Remember why you’e getting married; it’s because of the other person not the event!

Best advice someone told you at the wedding?
Honestly, I can’t remember…it all went by so fast!

Any specific reasons behind certain choices you made for your day? Maybe flowers that were mom’s favorite, or the first dance song was the first song you ever heard together…that kind of thing?
- My cake topper was my grandmother’s. She had it on her cake and my mother had it on hers!
- Adam’s family’s priest from Oregon flew in to marry us, which was so wonderful and sentimental!
- Our band was like our wedding theme they played music from the 40′s to the 70′s and we loved every minute.
- Our first dance song was “Send Me” by Sam Cooke.

Tell me something about your photographer, Beautiful Day Photography, that you absolutely loved:
I loved Laura from the moment I met her. I looked through 5 pictures and knew she was the one to understand my vision. I was adamant that our pictures weren’t too posed. I wanted a lot of action shots and just fun pictures that captured who we are and Laura did just that by having fun with us and really getting to know us on a personal level. My pictures prove it! Adam and I even invited her to Oregon to come visit!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story:
We are both performers and that led to our initial meeting. Rich and I met May 6, 2000 after Rich performed in a mutual friend’s recital at NYU. I walked up to him in Washington Square Park and started blathering on about how he was such a talented musician. We walked together from Washington Square Park to Union Square Park, where I lived at the time, exchanged numbers and the rest, as they say, was history! It was only fitting that Rich proposed at the exact spot in Washington Square Park where I had first approached him. This time, I said little more than “YES!!” and started crying!

What was the theme | design inspiration for your wedding?
My location and my relationship with my fiancé were definitely pieces of inspiration for my wedding. I knew I wanted rustic elegance with classic movie star fashion.

Tell us about the attire for both bride, groom and the bridal party:
Rich fell in love with a dark navy suit from Armani. He paired this with dark brown shoes from Banana Republic, shirt and tie from Theory. His groomsmen wore dark navy suits of their choosing paired with pale pink ties.

My bridesmaids were in what I like to call “lipstick colors,” magenta’s, berries and blush. My sister (and maid of honor) wore a deep eggplant dress. The dresses were by Jim Hjelm and purchased at the amazing Renee Strauss, for the bride here in Los Angeles!

My dress story – On a whim, I walked into Selia Yang’s storefront on East 9th St. in NYC and walked out with a sample, a very simple white A-line dress with absolutely no frills. I flew back to L.A. with the mission to make this my dream wedding dress. Luckily, I didn’t have to look very far. I am blessed to have two miraculously talented designers living within feet of my front door, Clay Sadler, a recent graduate of FIDM, and Susan Joy Brownstein, a graphic designer and jewelry designer. With a little sweat and a lot of love, we created my vintage-inspired headpiece, intricate bustle, and multi-colored petticoats which matched each of my bridesmaid’s dresses. We paired my ethereal shrug with a handcrafted velvet flower accented with Clay’s grandmother’s antique brooch. In addition we used vintage beads and fabric to craft a bouquet fastener that coordinated perfectly with my overall look. Once it all came together, I felt as though I was an old time film star come to life.

Favorite design element of your big day:
When it came to all the little paper details, I looked, once again, to Susan Joy Brownstein. She runs her own graphic design company and paper company and is a pro at capturing a person’s style in her designs. She created the ceremony programs, all signage, and CD favors which utilized our fantastic engagement shoot pix which were featured on Rock N Roll Bride’s blog this past May.

As far as music went I knew that we wanted a DJ. And as luck would have it, one of my best friends is a well known event MC here in Los Angeles, Rory Pollinger. As his gift to me, he MC’d our wedding and provided us with a very talented DJ as well. Everything was so seamless and done with such love. I could not have asked for more from him.

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding?
Trying to make sure everyone got up the winding mountain road in one piece! Thankfully, we hired a shuttle service for our guests.

What advice would you give to a couple planning their wedding?
Start soon! Know that there will be disagreements going in and be prepared to compromise! Make sure you take mental pictures throughout the day so you can remember each special moment.

Any specific reasons behind certain choices you made for your wedding? Maybe flowers that were your mom’s favorite, or your first dance song was the first song you ever heard together, that kind of thing?
I am Jewish and my husband is Christian. So we used elements from both faiths during our ceremony. My sister, Rachel Dean () is a fabulous fine artist and handmade our ketubah (Jewish wedding contract). She totally captured my exact taste and it was so special when everyone signed it together.

I had my cousin sing a very special song as my mom, dad and sister walked me down the aisle. And yes, my whole family walked me down. I figured it was only fair that they all got me to this point, so symbolically ushering me to Rich made sense to me. As for the song, it was “Near You Always” by Jewel.

Our first song was actually a song we heard on the radio one day, and by the time it was over, we both looked at each other and said “that’s our song.” It was “Then” by Brad Paisley. As it was a country song, we took country dance lessons with Trish Connery here in L.A. She choreographed a beautiful dance that we were happy to perform. And speaking of performances, one element that remained a surprise to everyone was our surprise performance of “Saw her Standing There” by the Beatles. We thought the lyrics were pretty accurate to when we met and everyone was very surprised by us breaking out into song when we were introduced into the reception. That was probably my favorite moment!

Tell me something about your photographer.
After an extensive search for a photographer, we found Laura Grier at Beautiful Day Photography. We fell in love with her laid back photo-journalistic style and her infectious positive energy. Through Laura, we actually ended up finding our wedding location, The Figueroa Mountain Farmhouse in Los Olivos, California, based on the photos from one of the gorgeous weddings she shot there. As you will see in the attached photos, we accomplished our vision of a “vintage rustic chic” themed wedding. Being the daughter of a NY event planner, Daveen Dean of Glittering Moments, really came in handy when choosing my vendors. Laura’s energy is amazing and she is totally stealthy. I had no idea she was even there, yet she made her presence known at the important moments. I am in love with every single shot, to the point that I have no idea how I will ever choose pix for our album!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story:
Well, we tell it differently, so here is mine and his:

Leslie:
It all began when our mutual costume designer friend, Julie Weiss, insisted that I meet “the greatest guy” named Sim. Having a horrible track record with blind dates, I politely declined. Julie, being as persistent as she is, gave Sim my number anyway. He called and amazingly, we had a lot in common and he sounded like a non-psychopath. So it was on, I had a blind date! That was it, I was hooked. It wasn’t long before we were spending lots of time together at the movies, batting cages, and lots of dinners. Sim made his intentions clear to everyone at my brother John’s wedding when he did a Michael Jordan worthy leap to catch the garter belt, after I had caught the bouquet. It wasn’t too long after when Sim asked for my Dad’s permission. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Sim:
When I ran into my old friend, Julie Weiss, I had no idea my life was about to change forever. I wasn’t feeling well that night and almost skipped the party. That night, Julie and I made a pact to set each other up with dates. Two days later, Julie called to tell me she had someone in mind for me named Leslie Durso. Minutes after the phone conversation, I proceeded to look her up online. I’m not proud of myself for cyber-stalking but at the same time I’m glad I did – her pictures were beautiful. After deciding my actions weren’t the least bit creepy, I dialed her number. That first phone conversation lasted almost an hour. We laughed throughout our first date at Tower Bar on the Sunset Strip. After the good food, great wine, and even better conversation — I was completely hooked. It was by far, the best date of my life and I could not wait to see her again. Subsequent dates consisted of me making her nauseated from driving, slamming her foot on the car door, and scalding her skin with hot tomato sauce. That’s just a sampling of the year to follow –and she still said yes when I asked! Leslie’s close friends know exactly how lucky I am to have found her. She is my partner and I’ve never been happier.

What was the theme or design inspiration for your wedding?
I really wanted a lot of tradition, combined with modern elegance.

Tell us about the attire for both bride and groom:
Sim wore a traditional tuxedo and I wore a custom Lazaro gown. The veil I wore was an antique Chantilly lace veil that my great-grandmother had made for my Grandmother’s wedding. My mother also wore it for her wedding.

Favorite design element of your big day:
Everything! I loved the flowers, I loved the bridesmaids dresses. I loved the cake. I loved my dress. Really, everything.

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding?
Wanting to include everything in our wedding. I realize there were some things that just weren’t going to make it in and that was ok.

What advice would you give to a couple planning their wedding?
Plan. Plan. Plan. Every tiny detail should be thought of. When everything has a plan, everything runs smoothly and calmly.

Best advice someone told you at the wedding?
Eat! And take a second to enjoy a moment together.

Any specific reasons behind certain choices you made for your wedding? Flowers that were your mom’s favorite, or your first dance was to the first song you ever heard together, that kind of thing?
Like I said before, we really tried to include a lot of traditions. We got married in the same church my parents did. I wore the same veil my Mother and Grandmother had worn. The knife we used to cut the cake has been in the family for over 200 years. Things like this were really special to me.

Tell me something about your photographers, Beautiful Day Photography.
She was more like a guest at the wedding who happened to have a camera in her hand. She is becoming a wonderful friend and I’m so happy she got to experience this with us. She got every single shot I could have ever possibly imagined!
