Sally and Jon’s Portland, OR Forest Wedding by Bryan Rupp Photography

silver-falls-state-park-wedding-photographs-26

I moved to Portland this last year and have absolutely fallen in love with it, for reasons evident in this real wedding. Sally and Jon were married surrounded by gorgeous green forests and fun, interesting friends (two things Portland has in abundance). Thank you to one of my very favorite local photographers, Bryan Rupp, for sharing this with us!

What was your vision?

My vision for a beautiful, crisp, fall, outdoor wedding went down the tubes when my

sister, who lives in India with her husband and two daughters, could only come for

more than a week if we held the wedding in the spring. So we settled for June 2nd (June

in Oregon = 99% chance of rain) and as a result, an indoor wedding. On the plus side,

my sister got to come out to Oregon for two whole months with the kiddos. What a

treat! I’m so, so very grateful for that time together. And the wedding was absolutely

beautiful. We found a way to compromise on the outdoor wedding by finding the

perfect indoor/outdoor venue. Also, it was cool enough that we were able to build fires

in the fireplace, which made my June wedding in Oregon feel oh so cozy.

Specific details:

Wedding colors: Yellow (bride’s favorite color), navy and peach.

Flowers: We wanted them to look easy, like freshly picked wild flowers. Everything was

in season and local (big savings) except the tulips. Jon studied in Amsterdam, so tulips

were a must!

Music: Jon is a huge music fan so this was his project. We wanted music everyone

could dance to but wanted to stay clear of the cheesy Macarena and Electric Slide stuff.

Jon suggested we go with a 50’s 60’s R&B sound. After about 10 interviews with DJs

we found the perfect fit with Ian Armstrong who not only knew his stuff, but played

vinyl! He was also a breeze to work with. Even my Hank-Williams-country-lovin’ family

got down to a little James Brown!!

DIY projects:

Wedding favors: We wrestled with the wedding favors for a while. We wanted to send

people home with something practical. So, we decided on food. And what better food

for a camp setting than trail mix (also known in my family as GORP –good old raisins

and peanuts)? Except, I hate raisins. So, Jon, my sister and I went to the bulk food

section of a local grocery store and picked out all the stuff we’d want in a trail mix.

Lots of different chocolate chips, sesame sticks, peanuts, banana chips, you name it!

We mixed everything in our brand-new giant cooler and filled 120, 12 oz. Ball jars.

Then, we topped each jar with a chocolate gold coin just for fun. We had a bunch of

burlap left over from the runners and used that to add some style. Then we tied handstamped

thank you cards to the lid. It took about a full day to get materials and

assemble everything. With all the help though, it was a ton of fun.

Escort cards: Instead of labeling each table with numbers, we used park symbols. Jon

and I picked out our favorite symbols like, fishing, ranger station, snow shoeing, and

playground. Everyone received an escort card with their name and park symbol. It

made assigning tables fun, because we got to put people at tables with symbols we

thought they would enjoy. We, of course, sat at the “four-wheel drive road” table.

Did your wedding location hold a specific significance to you?

My husband and I both value adventure. We love to camp, we love exploring and we

love Oregon. With so many guests coming in from out of town, we also wanted to get

in as much time with them as possible. The Youth Camp at Silver Falls State Park was

perfect. We had the whole place to ourselves for two days. There were more than

enough places to explore and our more daring guests were able to camp out in any of

the almost 40 sleeper cabins.

What was the most meaningful part of your day?

It’s a tie between the ceremony and the speeches. Our good friend, who is a very

talented writer, officiated. He wrote the most beautiful ceremony and vows. I cried the

first time I read it. The speeches were also very touching. I don’t think there was a dry

eye in the room!

Did anything funny or out of the ordinary happen?

In the middle of Jon’s dance with his mother, my one-and-a-half year old niece walked

out onto the dance floor and interrupted them with her own moves. In a “Rafiki

presents Simba to the pride” kind of way, my mother-in-law swooped her up, spun her

around and then continued the dance with my niece at her hip. All without skipping a

beat! It was a very beautiful and generous moment that really captured all the love in

the room.

Tell us details of the events surrounding the wedding as well.

Woodburn and Silverton both have some of the best Mexican food in Oregon so we

decided to honor that and my husband’s Hispanic heritage with a Mexican Fiesta

themed rehearsal dinner. Luis’s Taqueria provided the food with fresh tortillas from the

tortilla factory down the road. My mother-in-law also carried a custom-made record shaped

piñata all the way from New Hampshire. Later that night, the bridal party and I

went for a night hike down to one of the waterfalls. Although I wouldn’t recommend

anyone else do that (it’s against the rules and was pretty dangerous!), it was the most

beautiful scene. Standing under the falls with the night sky and my favorite girls with

me was the best way to spend the night before the wedding.

How did you know your partner was “the one”?

We had been together for over six years before we got married. So, I can’t really say

there was one defining moment. We’ve been through a lot. But, even when we

struggled we still managed to make each other laugh. Also, I think we look up to each

other. I have a tremendous amount of respect for my husband. He makes me want to

be a better person.

Any advice you’d give new brides who are just getting started?

Find ways for those you love to own a part of the special day. Don’t be afraid to release creative control! Some of my favorite details were contributions from our closest friends and family. For example, my aunt designed the cutest parking passes and

Jon’s buddies played our ceremony music. I wouldn’t recommend that “Uncle Joe”

cater the entire event, however. Big stuff is best left to the professionals. You don’t

want your guests working too hard on the day! What you might do is include him in

your decision making process or find a caterer that is open to making his signature

potato bacon salad, for example.

What DIY projects did you do?

My vision for the wedding was a more natural and casual wedding.  We had a ton of DIY projects.  Here is a list of things we made ourselves:
Shoes- The whole wedding party went barefoot.  For the bachelorette party the bridesmaids and I got together and made “barefoot sandals”.  They are beaded things that wrap around one of your toes and then go around your ankle.  We spent hours making them!
Bridesmaids Jewelry- I made all of the girls’ necklaces and then I had a friend make all of their earrings.
Garter- My mom and my sister made that.
Invitations- I designed them and then had them printed.  Once they came, my family helped to put them all together.  They were designed to look like a passport since our wedding was in Canada and we needed a passport to cross the border.
Centerpieces-  I love white birch trees, so my dad and brother cut down some trees and then we drilled holes down them and planted moss and flowers in them and also put candles in them.
Flower Girl Baskets- We cut up some white birch trees and then my dad hollowed them out.   I glued moss around the top of them and braided hemp string to make the handles.
Candy Table- We peeled white birch bark to wrap around containers and then also made some bowls out of the tree.
Program- I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on programs, so my dad had some big pieces of stone slate that we brought up and then my cousin used chalk to write out the program on the slates and we leaned them up against trees so everyone could see them during the ceremony.
Stage- My dad cut a huge log in half and then laid them near the lake for the whole wedding party to stand on.
Cake topper- Our cake topper was made by my brother and sister who welded and used wire to make two people sitting on a tandem bike.
Cake- My cousin made our mountain cake. We used a huge log bark and all for the base of the cake to sit on. She used candy stones for the path. We cut the cake with a machete!!
Pictures displayed- We used three big sticks that we tied together and then I used hemp string and little clothes pins to hang different pictures of Travis and me.

Did your wedding location hold a specific significance to you?
My husband and I got married at my parent’s lake house on Aylen Lake in Barry’s Bay, Ontario, Canada.  My grandfather was one of the first people to have a cabin on that lake and I have gone up there multiple times a year ever since I was born.  A lot of my family goes up every summer and we are usually there for about a month.

Did anything funny or out of the ordinary happen?
I always like to be different and do something unexpected.  One of the fun and different things we did for entertainment for our guests, was my husband Travis and I went water skiing in our wedding attire. Yes, I skiied in my actual wedding dress.  You only wear it once anyways!  After that, our whole wedding party was brought out to the water trampoline in boats where we posed for a picture and then the whole wedding party, including my mom, jumped off into the water.
Also, when  Travis and I walked back  the aisle after the ceremony, everyone shot nerf gun darts at us instead of doing the traditional bubbles or bird seed. Travis scooped me up in his arms and ran me off to “protect” me from the darts!!

What issues did you have with planning a destination wedding?

My family was a huge help in helping me get the wedding together.  Since it was a destination wedding we had to make everything at home and then find a way to transport it. We had a 30’ trailer that we loaded and took up with everything from food, grills, large canopy tent, picnic tables, chairs and more.  I was able to go to Canada a few times to meet with the company who did my flowers and to take some of the wedding decorations up.  For our invitations, I made it look like it was a passport, so my whole family got together to make an assembly line to put them together.  My family also helped a lot with the crafts and detail I was making too.
Also, since our cabin was kind of far from any big city, we decided to do a small wedding, with just family and close friends.  We were able to squeeze everyone into our cabins and our friends’ cabins on the lake.  We had fun being able to hang out with everyone the days before the wedding and my family and friends on the lake all came to help set everything up.

How did you know your partner was “the one”?

I could just tell that my husband was “the one.”  I could always picture us together and couldn’t imagine being with anyone else.  He was and still is my brother’s best friend and our families get along really well, which was important to me.  His mom had always wanted us to be together.  I just always loved being around him and I could be myself.  I never opened up to any one else as much as I opened up to him.  I could tell him absolutely everything.  He is my best friend.  We met at church when we were in the 4th grade, and it was important to me that whoever I married was a Christian.

Any advice you’d give new brides who are just getting started?
I would say stay calm.  If something goes wrong on the wedding day just think of it as a fun memory.  I didn’t stress about much of anything and was really laid back.  I looked online for lots of ideas, and I wanted to make my wedding more natural.  I spent hours on www.etsy.com for inspiration.  Family is great for helping you get things together.

A Playful Farm Engagement Session from 2&3 Photography

Nick and Nikki’s engagement shoot by 2&3 Photography is almost like two separate sessions. In the first set, they get to run around a farm (photographer Thad’s dad’s place) and play on old-fashioned swings, pull each other in wagons, pose in front of old trucks and just generally have a great time together (and get some adorable shots along the way).

For the second part, they get all gussied up for a series of romantic shots that capture the genuine affection they obviously have for each other. Put the two together and it’s like the perfect marriage of playful and romantic…

And, as if the photos aren’t enough, Nick jumps in and give us all the details on their proposal, the location and how he knew Nikki was the one (sigh).

How did you two meet?
It was Nikki’s freshman year of college. She had posted on our school message boards for help getting her printer hooked up and I offered to come take a look at it. We hadn’t set up a time for me to come by her dorm yet when we unknowingly sat next to each other in biology lab. We realized who each other was during attendance and I leaned over and asked “Did you get your printer fixed?”. I walked her back to her dorm and we haven’t been able to get rid of each other since. That was almost 8 years ago.

How did you know he/she was “the one”?
We always joke about how different we are, but in the end we share a lot of core values that I guess we couldn’t find in other people. We’ve spent some time apart over the years, but we’ve always loved and cared for each other and that always brought us back together.

Please, tell us about the proposal!
Nikki’s birthday falls on new years eve, so we decided to have a party to celebrate both occasions. We invited 15 or so of our closest friends to the house. Right after the ball drop and new year’s toast I gave a little speech thanking everybody for joining us for a night of many celebrations (NYE, Nikki’s birthday, and my best friends wedding anniversary) and that I wanted to add one more. I turned to Nikki and told her it wasn’t the first NYE/birthday celebration we’ve shared and I didn’t want it to be the last. I pulled out the ring and said, “so I guess you know what this means?”. Her response was, “Okay!” and she gave me a hug. I didn’t get down on one knee or anything, it was kind of informal.

Anything special about the engagement shoot or why you chose the location you did?
Our whole wedding theme is kind of outdoorsy and vintage. Her dress is her mothers wedding dress and her engagement ring is an estate ring from 1950. We’re having our wedding in our backyard and wanted our engagement photos to reflect those themes. Thad mentioned his father’s property and we thought that would be perfect with the older buildings and nearby fields. The shoot was a ton of fun and the photos came out perfect.

A Gorgeous Vineyard Wedding from Bend the Light Photography

Maybe it’s because Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and I’m feeling the love early, but today’s wedding makes me so darn happy every time I look at it. Bend the Light Photography did a fantastic job of capturing the affection between these two – they look like they have a great time together (and there are a couple where you can just feel how much Eric adores Amy).

And the details! They were married at Becker Vineyards in Fredericksburg, Texas so they not only had a huge oak tree to frame their ceremony, but access to their wine cellar, lavender fields and old-fashioned porch. Both of them had their brothers as their Best Man and Man of Honor and rather than a traditional guest book they went with guests filling out Mad Gabs. So creative!

Make sure to stop by their gallery for even more shots of their beautiful day.
