stott_hovan_devils_thimb_0024

This Devil’s Thumb Ranch wedding is absolutely stuffed full of fun details from the gorgeous tables to Cori’s sweet little cardigan. But I think my favorite is Cori’s beaming smile through the whole thing. I love it when brides radiate pure giddiness! Preston Utley was there to capture all of that unbridled joy in this great Colorado celebration!

What details did you incorporate into the vision for your wedding day?

When we started dating, Nate and I played a lot of board and card games together. He used to take me away every fall on a “supersecret getaway” where he would tell me what to pack and then take me somewhere for a surprise weekend. In 2010, we went to a small cabin in the woods in Steamboat Springs, CO. After a day of hot springs and hiking, we played Scrabble. As I dozed off on the couch, he rearranged the Scrabble letters to spell out “Will you marry me?”. To honor this engagement, we made our own favors out of vintage Scrabble tiles. They were little tins containing words having to do with love.

Though neither of us is religious, I was educated at a Quaker school and have held the basic tenets of that religion close to my heart. To honor this, in lieu of a guest book, Maura at Paper Guppy created a Quaker wedding scroll for us and we asked all assembled to witness our marriage by signing the document. It now hangs in our livingroom as a reminder of our day and of the family and friends we love.

As far as vision for the day…. We wanted the outdoors to have a large part in our wedding and we wanted to ensure that it was a fun party for everyone in attendance. Our key goal was for people to enjoy themselves and I think, with the help of our amazing band and the incredible scenery, we succeeded!

Did your wedding location hold a specific significance to you?

We wanted to hold our wedding in Colorado, outside, and in the mountains, so that we could share this place we love with our friends and family.

What was the most meaningful part of your day?

There were many things. My little brother served as our officiant, and he wrote his own ceremony around the vows we had chosen. It was really special to have him be the person to bring Nate and I together in marriage.

When I was a very little girl, my dad and I had a favorite song, “Dancing on the Ceiling” by Lionel Richie. He would put the tape on and then lift me up, toss me into the rafters, and catch me on the way down, so I could literally dance on the ceiling. I surprised him by choosing this song for our father-daughter dance and I have never seen my dad dance like that! At one point, he actually threw his suit coat off into the audience!

Nate and I stayed in the same room for the weekend, so we were able to wake up and have a few minutes of quiet together before the craziness of our day began. It was really special to be able to take that time to just be quiet and calm for a little while together.

My closest cousin, Carrie, gave me my “something borrowed & something blue” at the rehearsal dinner when, crying, she lent me a sapphire that her husband had given her on their first anniversary over twenty years ago.

Though both sets of my grandparents passed many years ago, I was able to have my Grandma there through my earrings, which were made from her engagement ring diamonds, and my Memere through my “something old, new, borrowed, blue” where I had her religious medal of Saint Anne De Beaupre pinned to the bodice of my gown.

Did anything funny or out of the ordinary happen?

When we were in our early twenties, my best friend and maid of honor, Laura, and I were sitting around one day and made a bet. If I got married first, she had to lead the Funky Chicken at my wedding and, if she got married first, I would have to sing a medley of love songs at her wedding. As the first one to get married, I had largely forgotten about the bet until Laura’s toast. She told everyone about the bet and stated “I won’t be doing the Funky Chicken at your wedding….At least not alone.” The music started and most of the room leapt up in a Funky Chicken flash mob Laura had organized in the weeks preceding the wedding! The one time I cried all day was from laughing so hard at her funky chicken toast.

Tell us details of the events surrounding the wedding.

We chose to make a full weekend of it at the Ranch and nearly all of our out-of-town family and friends were able to arrive early to enjoy the activities Colorado has to offer. Nate’s parents threw a rehearsal dinner in the Timberline Room at the Ranch, providing an incredible view of the Continental Divide at sunset. In addition to the wedding, my parents hosted a late-night snack fest at Heck’s Tavern, which was sorely needed after all those hours of dancing and drinking, and a Sunday brunch at the Ranch House Restaurant on-site. It was awesome to have that chance to see everyone in a laid-back setting before we all departed for home.

Any advice you’d give new brides who are just getting started?

I have never considered myself to be a wedding sort of girl and, left to my own devices, I never would have been able to put together what I realize now was my dream wedding. Hiring a wedding planner was the single best decision and the best expenditure we made.

Mike and Nicole’s Southern Inspired New York Real Wedding by Brookelyn Photography

mn226

You know how everywhere you turn right now, there is some type of top 5 or top 10 list? I’m obsessed with them. I can’t stop (is there a 12 step program for this?). And so, please pardon me if I tell you the top 5 things I love about Mike and Nicole’s wedding by the super awesome Brookelyn Photography:

1. The flowers. I mean, they are ah-mazing. From the bouquets to the centerpieces, I am just in awe.

2. The mason jar goblets. They are my new favorite thing. And I want them. Badly.

3. The bridesmaid dresses. I love gray. And the style was universally flattering. Way to go, Nicole!

4. The wreaths adorning the end of each pew. Love, love, love, love this. A lot.

5. The signage. Everything was super cute, witty, and stylish.

I encourage everyone to make their own top 5 list, because there are TONS o’ details to admire here!

I’d love to hear about any specific details, your vision for the day, any DIY projects you did herself or have special meaning….

Mike and I both have a love of the South.  The most memorable trip we ever took together was a road trip to Nashville for a country music festival.  Southern elements and inspiration from country songs definitely played a big role in our inspiration for the day.  From mason jar luminaries referencing Miranda Lambert’s “Me & Charlie Talkin’” to our rustic venue’s exposed beams (which reminded me of an old barn), to our stationery inspired by Nashville’s famous Hatch Show Print.  I feel like we had at least a hand in making everything and every part of our day reflect us as people in some way.  Mike designed all of the stationery while I painted the table numbers, sewed the runners and drew up designs for all of the florals (I gave the florist a 15 page booklet of inspiration & drawings which they nicknamed “the bible”). The whole wedding was really like a two year long DIY project & I loved every second of it!

Did your wedding location hold a specific significance to you?

One of Mike and my favorite things to do is to hop in the car on a nice day and drive out to the east end of Long Island.  The scenery out there is as if you’ve driven south instead of east.  We love the country atmosphere of the North Fork and knew we wanted a venue that reflected that on our wedding day, without the price tag that comes with actually getting married on the North Fork.  Long Island is full of cookie cutter catering halls.  We knew that was one thing that we did not want! When we found The Old Field Club we immediately fell in love with it; it has just the right amount of rustic charm!

What was the most meaningful part of your day?

Mike is a web designer, so I wasn’t surprised when my card was presented to me on my iPad, in the form of a website. It was so sweet in such a creative way and reminded me not to get caught up in all of the wedding day details that I painstakingly planned for the two years prior, but to enjoy the day where I get to marry my favorite person in the world.

Did anything funny or out of the ordinary happen?

For the entirety of our engagement I teased Mike (who is notorious for mumbling and jumbling up his words) that he would mix up his vows.  When the time came, it ended up being me who jumbled up the vows. I cracked up right there on the altar of this beautiful and very traditional church.  The moment was very indicative of our relationship.  We are constantly laughing at each other and ourselves.  One of my favorite photos from the day is of this moment.

Tell us details of the events surrounding the wedding.

My mom, sister, and best friend planned me a beautiful and intimate shower at a local wine bar called Barrique.  I didn’t want a traditional shower, and what they gave me was so unique. They printed photos of us through the years and used clothespins to attach them to twine around the room and had the guests sign fabric squares with advice for Mike and me.  They were all then sewn into a quilt by my maid of honor and her mother.  It really was lovely.

How did you know your partner was “the one”?

I had to have had an inkling before this, but we spent 20 hours in the car together on the way to Tennessee.  I knew if we could be happy stuck in the car together, tired and cranky, then we had to be meant to be.  He must have felt the same, he proposed a month later!

Any advice you’d give new brides who are just getting started?

Make it your own!  Your day should be all about you and your partner and your guests should feel like insiders into your own little world.  Don’t plan an “insert bride & groom here” kind of wedding, make it personal!

Cost: 50 cents a piece.

Supplies:

simple glass votive holders
votive candles
yarn (we used cashmere which was just $2 for a roll at Michael’s)
double stick tape
scissors
supplies-string-yarn-votive-candle-tape

Steps:
votive-candle-yarn-tape-string1. Wrap double stick tape around votive holders. We used about 2 -3 rows per votive and spaced them out.

2. Stick the yarn vertically across the tape and then start wrapping it horizontally around the candle, leaving the long strand visible.

votive-sideyarn-wrapped-rolling3. Keep wrapping yarn around the candle until it’s covered almost all the glass. The yarn shouldn’t be in rows, just wrap it haphazardly around the votive holder.

tying-knot-votive-yarn-scissors
scissors-yarn-votive-wrapped4. When you are done wrapping the yarn, take the end and tie it to the first piece. Trim the ends off and tuck the knot.

Tips/Mistakes:
Don’t make the rows of yarn too symmetrical or perfect it looks best when it’s a little messy!

Real Wedding Re-Run: Esther and Won’s Elegant Wedding with Traditional Korean Ceremony

We originally published this wedding almost exactly a year ago. When I came across it today, I just had to repost. It has amazing details and is a terrific example of a fusion wedding!

Esther and Won’s wedding is an elegant affair (photographed beautifully by Sloan Photographers) with a twist. As if their classic detailing wasn’t enough (bird cage veil, white roses, a timeless sheath dress with heavenly train), they also honored their roots with a traditional Korean ceremony, complete with a serious wardrobe change. I love that they were able to seamlessly blend the two cultures – it’s a great example of really making your wedding day represent who you are as a couple (and judging by the groom’s smile, I’m thinking they also felt like it was a success!).

And  just for fun, be sure to check out the photo of the kid jumping to catch the garter – talk about hops!
