A Book Lovers’ Engagement Session from Bethany Belle Photography

Today’s engagement shoot from Bethany Belle Photography has two of my absolute favorite things – an ode to books and a couple with some serious fashion sense. Christian definitely knows how to work a bow tie, and Stacey…well, let’s just say I’m suffering from shoe envy out the wazoo and am going to have to some research on circle scarves.

But, the shoot isn’t just about their killer duds. The couple is planning a book-themed wedding so they thought what better venue for their photos than the library? Styled by Patterns on Walls, it’s a very modern shoot with a touch of vintage flair.

Willy and Ashley’s Engagement Shoot at Union Station in Los Angeles

How did you meet?
Willy and I met in college. I had decided to transfer schools and moved up to San Francisco and, consequently, we lost contact. We ran into each other years later at a local bar in the same area we went to school. Convinced he had a thing for my best friend, I didn’t give him the time of day. Next thing you know, he invited my friend and me to a Christmas party… and, after a few drinks, he was holding my hand. I haven’t wanted to let go since…

Did you know when you met, that he was “the ONE?”
As cliche as it sounds, I knew Willy was “the one”. The timing was perfect. We were both at a stage in our life where we were comfortable being alone and weren’t actively seeking out a relationship with anyone. There is a difference between wanting and needing a companion. I also knew he was “the one” because he reminds me of my father in so many ways.

Tell us about your fiance.
He appreciates the simple things in life. He can spend hours on the beach digging up crab holes. He’s my best friend and his face lights up when he sees me first thing in the morning, every morning.

We spent Christmas in 2007 in the Dominican Republic. Willy and I got into the topic of engagement and marriage. More and more the topic had been presenting itself. I told Willy that he shouldn’t feel any pressure, that when he was ready, I was ready and the answer would surely be yes. Looking back on it now, I had felt it coming and truthfully was eager to relieve pressure on both sides. I didn’t want him to go to extravagant lengths to tell me everything he’s already shown me. I didn’t need him to get down on his knee – after all it was a dirt road – only to propose what we both were already committed to. I thought it was coming on Christmas, so I felt it was my job to say all of this prior, so that when it did come, it’d be simple, carefree, and natural. And in a moment’s notice I got everything I wanted and suspected, when I least expected it. I took a sip from my drink and a glance over at the water only to turn back and find a ring awaiting me. We both shed a few tears. He had been carrying the ring with him all the while, waiting for the right moment.

Describe your ring.
My ring is from 1840. It has a citrine stone in the middle with a gold foil wrap backing, giving it a golden appearance. The stone is sandwiched between a small pearl on each side.

When was the wedding?
August 29th, 2009.

Which one is your favorite engagement session photo, and why?
I couldn’t choose; they are all fantastic.

I love that their passion for photography extends beyond merely wedding photography.

Engagement Session with James and Sophia in San Francisco, CA

How did you meet?
We met at church. James has been attending the same church since his freshman year of college and I was a newcomer back in 2007. He noticed me as soon as I began attending, and we were friends for about a year before we started dating.

Did you know when you met, that he was “the ONE?”
No way! I knew that James liked me for awhile before he approached me about dating, and the entire time I was thinking “Okay… I like being friends with him, but can I really imagine myself KISSING this guy!? NO!” Even after we started dating, I was very clear in making sure that we were going at a really slow pace.

Tell us about your fiance.
James is in one word: musical. He has an ear for all things music, including playing, listening to, creating, or producing original music. He has a special gift in taking songs and then rearranging them so they sound completely different. I love taking my favorite songs to him and asking him to “do something” with them on the guitar. He always comes back to me with a completely unique rendition of the song!

Share with us the “proposal story!”
I already knew a proposal was coming (long story short, James didn’t know how to hold in his excitement at knowing that he was going to propose to me). So for James, the most important thing was to somehow maintain some element of surprise. He would have taken me somewhere really romantic and done the whole 9 yards with an elaborate proposal, but that would have been too obvious. Instead, he went in a completely opposite direction by proposing to me on the most random day of the week possible (Wednesday) in the most random place possible (my kitchen). We were standing together in my kitchen preparing a salad for my lunch the next day. I had no idea that he had slyly snuck the ring into the container where the dressing would have gone (no – he didn’t mix dressing in there as well, people always ask us that). After he was done “making the dressing” he asked me to check it. At first, I brushed him off because I had a feeling he would have messed up in making it, but after several times of him urging “LOOK AT IT!”, I turned around. Imagine my confusion when, instead of oil and vinegar, I found myself staring at something small and shiny… and then I noticed James on one knee. And then you know how the rest of this story goes.

Describe your ring.
2-carat, cushion cut in white gold Tiffany setting.

Which one is your favorite engagement session photo, and why?
My favorite engagement photo is one where James and I are standing on an escalator and he has his arms around me and I’m staring up into his face. I just think the body language is really natural and something that really captures how we fit together as a couple. We’re both comfortable and happy in the photo; you can’t really see his face but you can see that I’m beaming up at him. Love it!

Their sense of humor! It’s always kind of awkward when you have cameras clicking away and following you around outside (especially, when you’re in a SF city BART station) but Jaime and Dennis made the entire experience so memorable and comfortable! They kept us relaxed and laughing and we just really enjoyed ourselves during the entire shoot. I think you can see that being portrayed through the photos that were captured.

Ryan and Liz Marry in Malibu, CA

Tell us your story:
We both attended the Portfolio Center in Atlanta, and spent several months passing each other in the halls until Ryan ended up working on projects with my roommate. Our friendship blossomed over the next year or so, and after a few long walks, a Braves game, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, we realized something more was afoot. We conveniently fell for each other three months before we both departed Atlanta for different cities.

What was the theme | design inspiration for your wedding?
We knew we wanted a wedding that was laid back and fun, but still memorable. Once we found the perfect location, Rancho Del Cielo in Malibu, we set out to create a day that would truly reflect our personalities and everything else fell into place.

Tell us about the bridal attire:
I found the perfect strapless, A-line, floor-length dress at a charity event to benefit breast cancer research and knew it was a great match for the ocean garden setting of our wedding. My best friend and her mom made the bridesmaids’ turquoise cotton/sateen strapless sundresses. Ryan chose a casual, light summer suit and dressed his groomsmen in short sleeve white dress shirts, linen beach pants and white Chuck Taylor’s.

Favorite design element of your big day:
We loved the cheerful color palette of turquoise and red, which paired well with the ocean and garden settings, but our favorite element, was the custom popcorn box favors that doubled as escort cards.

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding?
Surprisingly, finding an affordable wedding cake that both looked and tasted amazing proved to be difficult. After a few missteps, we decided to cut out the cake all-together and had a custom sundae bar at the reception instead. Ryan and I built each other our “first sundaes,” and each guest got to make their own. It ended up being one of the best parts of the reception. Who needs cake?

What advice would you give to a couple planning their wedding?
The best thing we learned is that you don’t have to follow the traditional template in order to have a perfect wedding. When you start planning, you hear a lot about what you’re “supposed to do,” but ask yourself what you want to do. It will be your unique touches that go outside the norm that will make your day memorable.

Whether in the “toast”, or in a ceremony reading, or just in passing, what was the best advice someone gave you at the wedding?
At our reception, an uncle said we should read our wedding vows to each other every year on our anniversary. This tradition would remind us of our perfect wedding day, and serve to renew our commitment and promise to each other with each passing year. Simple and beautiful advice that we’ll certainly follow.

What’s your most favorite part of the wedding?
The ceremony goes without saying, but seeing that our families and friends were having as good of a time as we were really made us feel like we had accomplished what we set out to create in our celebration.

Any specific reasons behind certain choices you made for your wedding? Flowers that were Mom’s favorite, or your first dance was the to the first song you ever heard together…that kind of thing?
We spent a lot of time creating custom play lists for our ceremony, cocktail hour and reception. We wanted music that we liked, but also carefully selected several favorites of friends and family members. Our guests definitely noticed, and we received numerous compliments on the music.

Tell me something about your photographer, Viera Photographics.
When we started looking for wedding photographers, Dennis and Jaime’s work definitely stood out from the rest. And once we talked to them, we knew we wanted to work with them. They’re just an incredibly fun, like-minded pair whose passion for what they do is impossible to overlook, and their dedication to their craft gave us an end result we could have never even imagined. Best of all, on a day that is naturally stressful, Jaime and Dennis kept us laughing and at ease, treating us more like friends than just clients.
