Farmer’s Market Inspiration from Melanie at You Are My Fave

fm1

One of my absolute favorite parts of spring and summer is the fresh produce that abounds. Since I live in the city, the freshest I can get comes from the weekend farmer’s markets with crates and tables filled to the brim with local goodies. Every time I go, I can’t think of a better place to look for celebration inspiration. Here are five ideas of how to incorporate the farmer’s market into your next fete:

fm2

1. Forgo centerpieces of flowers in favor of a mix of vibrantly colored fruits and vegetables arranged organically.

2. Go buffet style with the menu and display the food as if it were at a market, placed on long tables filled with wooden crates and baskets.

3. Base the menu on local ingredients.

4. Use flour sack towels as napkins for a more casual feel.

5. Hand out market totes as your favor and encourage guests to fill with the produce and flowers used for decoration.

How to Make Sugared Fruit

Frosted fruit is festive for a winter or holiday wedding. It’s inexpensive too! Try your hand at making some. With a little practice, you’ll have it down in no time! Total cost for one centerpiece: $25.

Supplies:

fruit

fine white sugar

egg whites

paintbrush

collage-one

Steps:

1. Separate eggs so you have a bowl of egg whites.

2. Use the paintbrush to apply a thin layer of egg whites onto a piece of fruit (work on one at a time or they will dry too quickly).

3. Roll the fruit in a shallow bowl or plate of sugar.

4. Fill in holes by sprinkling more sugar on the fruit.

5. Let the fruit dry for about 20 minutes and repeat once.

Tips/Mistakes:

Small fruit works best. Try using small tangerines, apples, pears grapes or oranges. Be sure to use very fine sugar or it will clump. If you are using fruit without long stems, get some skewers so you have something to hold onto when you are adding sugar to the fruit. Prepare a few days in advance and style in a small wooden bowl with ribbon in the center of round reception tables.

Friday Chocolate Break!

untitled-1

Can we keep it real? It is Friday and all I want is a salted chocolate-covered caramel. I noticed that Fran’s now sells wedding favors, and you should totally check them out. But really, get something for you. Really. It will make the engagement photo sessions and venue tours and meeting the new in-laws for the first time so much better.

Normally I am not a fan of fruit + chocolate. It seems to defy the laws of nature. But I tell you, their chocolate covered apricots are out.of.this.world.

sauces
Ice cream and caramel sauce. The perfect Friday night treat. What if you don’t have ice cream? Well, that is when you have to shamefully eat the sauce straight out of the jar.

Inspiration Board: Sweet Tables

candy-sweets-favors-display-inspiration-boardWhen planning a sweet table, the goal is to enhance the theme of your wedding, not detract from it. For example, if you are having a very sleek and minimalist wedding in muted tones, you don’t want to have a lavish and brightly colored table dripping with candy necklaces and giant lollipops. If your wedding theme doesn’t fit the traditionally nostalgic sweet table, try a monochromatic presentation in white or one of your wedding colors.

Before you determine how many candies and pastries to buy for your sweet table, first decide what you want the layout to be. The goal should be a fairly symmetrical design. I love the look of glass jars in varying sizes and shapes. Remember, sweet tables are not necessarily a buffet for guests. You shouldn’t think in terms of how much each person will enjoy, but rather what will maximize your presentation. Above all, this is a chance to incorporate an extra dash of fun to your wedding reception.

Green Bride Guide With Exciting Guest Gift Bag Ideas

shopping_bags_2

DIY gift bags are a fun and easy way to add a personal touch to your wedding and say thank you to your guests for traveling on your special day. You can create a bag based on your wedding theme, the season, or the location of your wedding.

To start, choose a sturdy bag that guests can use again. Try an organic cotton shopping bag or other reusable tote that can be repurposed as a grocery or beach bag. Next comes the best part: deciding what to include!

Protect guests from the elements.
If you are having an outdoor summer wedding, find a natural, non-toxic sunscreen to include. For weddings in the fall and winter months when the air turns cold and dry, a luscious lip balm is just the cure.

Another great way to keep your company comfy during colder months is to buy handmade scarves or mittens from a craft fair in your area, or make them yourself. You can choose from eco-friendly fabrics with natural dyes and no harsh chemicals, or even soft and fuzzy alpaca wool from a nearby farm.

Rustic Chic Wedding

Supply your guests with something to snack on!
You can support local business and lower fuel consumption by including foods that are from the region where your wedding will be held. For a New England wedding, include a small bottle of Vermont Maple syrup to showcase a local specialty!

Depending on the season, you might be able to purchase fruit from nearby farmer’s markets or take your wedding party to a pick-your-own orchard as a pre-wedding activity.

Keep guests pampered and entertained.
Make guests feel relaxed and at home with natural bath and body products.Throw in some recycled paper playing cards for fun during downtime.
