Did your wedding location hold a specific significance to you?

We live in LA and had 2 days of events with family prior to the wedding, so we thought it would be nice to pick a location slightly outside of LA where our family and friends could take a little mini holiday, especially since it was during a 3-day weekend (4th of July weekend).  Plus, since George grew up in Singapore, we had lots of family coming from all around the world so it was lovely having everyone stay in the resort together, I think there were almost 100 guests from our wedding staying at the hotel, it was lovely running into everyone the whole weekend.

What was the most meaningful part of your day?

The whole day was spectacular.  We were both in such a surreal, blissful place while taking couples photos, during our Ketubbah signing, ceremony, and reception.  I don’t know how we had so much energy to keep going but it was just such an adrenaline rush and every minute was so amazing.  I think one of the most special parts of the day was after the Ketubbah signing, before the ceremony, George and I went back to the room, just the two of us, and just relaxed together for half an hour and took it all in, before the actual wedding even began!  We practiced some of our dance moves, just talked and laughed.  It was so sweet.

Did anything funny or out of the ordinary happen?

One really great, unique part was that my dad and 2 brothers joined the band to perform our first dance song for us!  My dad sang and my brothers played piano and guitar, they played “Dance Me to the End of Love” by Leonard Cohen, which I have always fantasized about dancing my first dance to.  I immediately started crying, it was such a wonderful surprise!  Also, my brother Jason sang “The Way You Look Tonight” for my father-daughter dance, and George sang “In A Little While” by U2, which was totally spontaneous and romantic.  AND during “Can’t Take My Eyes off of You,” George and I went on stage with the band and sang and danced like crazy, everyone was just so energetic it was so much fun.

How did you know your partner was “the one”?

We had been great friends for almost 3 years before we started dating, so once we did, I think a part of me always knew we would end up together.  There was never an “ah ha” moment, but we were always just so comfortable with each other and supportive of each other.  That’s what matters most I think.  We never give up on the relationship because there will always be ups and downs, but each time we get through something tough together we are just stronger and closer because of it.  And we laugh a lot together.  All the time.

Any advice you’d give new brides who are just getting started?

Try to enjoy the planning process as much as possible!  It gets really tough and stressful at times (there were days toward the end when I would just wake up and start crying!) but in the end, on the day of the wedding, none of it matters.  Everything will work out beautifully and all that matters is that you guys look at each other, take it all in, and enjoy yourselves.  Everyone told us that our energy the whole night was so great, and I think it’s true. We had such a great time dancing all night, and I think that’s really what made our guests have a great time too.

Festive Finery with Geronimo Balloons

geronimo-large-balloons-tassels-ribbon-los-angeles-01

I was recently having a conversation with a friend who was dead set against the idea of including balloons as a part of any wedding decor. She thought them to be much more “seven year old” than “sophisticated”. But, I would beg to differ with the finery being offered up by Los Angeles-based Geronimo!

In the hands of Geronimofounder, Jihan Zencirli, the idea of basic balloons gets completely pin-popped as she bedecks these enormous orbs with paper adornments, ribbon, millinery, and hand cut paper “fancy”. Each order is completely custom and is sure to add not only wit and whimsy to a wedding but, dare I say it, even a festive level of sophistication.

These artistic balloon constructions would make for fun additions to engagement or wedding photos, or an over-the-top prop for a photo booth that would definitely help bring the kid out in everyone. Of course, the kid they’d help bring out would be a very sophisticated seven year old.

Monica and Terrence’s Swanky Wedding in Dallas, TX

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story:
Terrence: We met at a bar. But it’s not what you think. Really. In September 2000, we attended the Sunbelt Job Fair at the Crown Plaza Suites in Dallas, Texas. I was coming down from an interview in a glass elevator, when I spotted a beautiful lady sitting at the bar. I got off of the elevator, and made my way over to the bar. To my good fortune, my best friend was talking to this beautiful lady, Monica. I conveniently injected myself into the conversation, and we immediately hit it off. Monica was not only beautiful, but funny and intelligent as well. The good news is that we both landed jobs – Monica in Dallas, and I in New York. The not-so-good news is that we had to wait 4 1/2 years before seeing each again.

What was the theme or design inspiration for your wedding?
From the very beginning, our goal was to have a wedding that was elegant and classy. But at the same time, we wanted to establish a laid-back atmosphere that everyone would enjoy.

Tell us about the attire for both bride and groom:
Monica: I wore a Maggie Sottero A-line gown with a floral motif and a corset closure. I had a custom veil designed using flowers from the dress. I accessorized with a pair of gold Jimmy Choo heels and a pearl necklace and bracelet (a present from my Terrance) by Mikimoto.

Terrance wore a classic Jones New York two-button black tuxedo and vest, accessorized with a David Donahue textured champagne silk necktie and handkerchief, and silver Movado Sapphire timepiece (a present from me).

Favorite design element of your big day:
Monica: This is such a hard question to answer, because there were so many elements about our wedding that we loved. But, if we had to pick a favorite, it would probably be the fact that we had not one, but three rooms for our reception! We incorporated different shades of our colors, pink and gold, to create a different atmosphere in each room. The reception began with a cocktail hour in a room decorated in soft pink and champagne, which exuded an understated elegant atmosphere. The room had an adjoining patio area where our band, Full of Soul, began their first set with light jazz. After the cocktail hour, our guests moved to a second room where a seated dinner was served. This room had mirrored walls and was filled with round tables covered in huge bouquets of flowers, candles, and crystal candle holders. We also had pink lighting that cast a beautiful glow across the room. Aiming to achieve that laid-back feeling that we hoped that our guests would enjoy, the third and final room was decorated in hot pink, gold, and leopard print. It was funky, but tastefully done. A perfect room for dancing!

We would be remiss if we didn’t also mention the photo booth, which was a great hit. I absolutely LOVE photo booths, and I always drag Terrance and Moriah into them every chance I get. We provided silly hats, glasses, and boas. Glue, scissors, and markers were available for our guests, to add some of their photos to a scrapbook with words of advice.

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding?
Terrance and I really wanted to give our guests an amazing experience, but we had to work with constraints, namely money. In order to achieve this goal, we had to keep the wedding very small, fifty guests to be exact. It was very challenging for us to decide which twenty-five of our closest friends and family to invite. It was also very difficult explaining to those friends and family who were not invited that we had to keep the wedding small for budgetary reasons.

What advice do you have for a couple planning their wedding?
Select a wedding date which will provide you with sufficient time to plan and save for your special day. A long engagement can be a good thing. Identify the aspects of the wedding that are most important to each of you, and be supportive of each other in achieving those goals. And, finally, make a realistic budget, and stick to your budget.

Best advice someone told you at the wedding?
Terrance: always listen to your wife.

Monica: take a little bit of time each day to remember why you married him.

Any specific reasons behind certain choices you made for your wedding? Maybe flowers that were your mom’s favorite, or your first dance song was the first song you ever heard together..that kind of thing?
It was important for us to incorporate our children, Moriah (10) and T.J. (11) into the wedding ceremony. Because our guest list was so small, we felt it unnecessary to have a large wedding party. Instead, we tapped Moriah as “little maiden of honor/flower girl” and T.J. as “little best man/ring bearer.” During the ceremony, we made special vows to the children and presented them with tokens of our commitment to them.

In addition, the kids were each able to invite one friend to the wedding, and we had a special table set up for the kids, complete with kid-friendly food (pizza, fries, fruit, and burgers), toys (clay, colored-pencils, cars), and enough candy to feed a small army.

Tell me something about your photographer, Kelly Moore.
We love everything about our photographer, from her creativity to her ability to capture the essence of a moment. Kelly was absolutely amazing and we can’t wait to work with her again for Moriah’s wedding.

A Lovely Seaside Wedding from Kardashian Finale’s Singer/Songwriter

Perhaps you’ve heard of a little family called the Kardashians? And perhaps you’re even planning on watching their season finale tonight (I know I am for purely – ahem – professional reasons)? Well, when Chris proposes to Kim make sure to pay attention to the song playing, “I Do“, because it’s written and performed by one of our all-time favorite brides, Stacy, who shared her adorable engagement shoot with us last November! How fantastic is that!?!

Now if that wasn’t exciting enough, Stacy also sent along wedding photos by Farhad Samari from her lovely seaside wedding in Newport Beach, California. It has all the elements we love – a gorgeous dress, fun shoes and personal details that tell the story of the couple (her candy table is absolute perfection). Make sure you keep reading after the photos to hear all about Stacy’s perspective on their Big Day, plus hear her excellent advice.

If you miss Stacy’s song tonight you can hear it online or head over to Facebook for a free download of her song “I Know Who I Am.” betsey-johnson-heels-chair-bride-tyingbride-wedding-dress-black-white-shoesblack-suit-groom-tie-purple-boutonnierered-roses-bouquet-tightly-bound-tablebride-groom-fun-store-black-white-red-bouquetseaside-ocean-hotels-town-yachtswedding-party-blue-sky-sunglasses-black-dressesbride-groom-holding-hands-classic-hotel-black-whiteflower-girl-black-dress-musician-guitarcandy-bar-diy-jars-cards-purple-blackbride-groom-dancing-fairy-lights-diymr-mrs-chairs-black-bow-wedding-decorwedding-cake-tiered-petals-black-whitewedding-cake-flower-bottles-sand-thank-you-cards-diybride-groom-bubbles-photo-booth-redbride-groom-outlined-shadows-green-room

Stacy’s Perspective:

Tell us about any specific details, your vision for the day, any DIY projects you did yourself or that have special meaning….
We decided to style the wedding close to our personal style. Vintage meets modern. The location was stunning being right on the water so we didn’t need to go  overboard with decorations. Just simple and classic. My mother in law made the cutest boutonnieres and handmade signs for our candy bar. She even made the & sign out of Styrofoam to tie our chairs together. We had a lot of cute little signs and decorations, but also pretty simple. We got married in April so decided to use black and white anemone flowers being that is when they are in season. I had red roses for my bouquet. It was more green and more affordable. We also used the flowers along with a floating candle in our centerpiece. Le Fleur did a great job decorating our arch. We got married under it and then had it placed behind us during dinner. To make the room more romantic we strung up some sparkly lights and hung glass lanterns. To end the feast at we had a candy bar, mini cupcakes and cake for our guests. It was a good variety where our guests could pop a desert in there mouth and keep dancing. The funfetti cake balls and mini cupcakes where a hit. I highly recommend renting a photo booth with props. Our guests loved it and got to take a copy of each photo they took as a favor to remember the night.

Did your wedding location hold a specific significance to you?
It is a beautiful area and near where he proposed.

What was the most meaningful part of your day?
Seeing my husband to be and reading his gift which was a kind letter filled with words of affirmation and love. That and confirming our love by having a beautiful ceremony in front of the people we love the most was awesome. That and of course the dancing after. It’s the one day a girl can have her cake and eat it to!

Did anything funny or out of the ordinary happen?
There where a few. My favorite was during the photos a “parking enforcement” police officer did not want us taking photos on the beach. I am not sure what his problem was, but it was quite comical when one of our groomsmen who was a lawyer started asking him questions why and the officer said because we didn’t have a permit which as irrelevant being as the photos where not being sold. We took our photos and left. He was a tool and has some serious bad wedding day kharma coming. I found it very comical as the whole time he had his hand on his holster. Seriously.

Tell us details of the events surrounding the wedding as well.
Lots of planning! We had our rehersal dinner at the Macaroni Grill in Tustin. We had it early as a lot of our guests where from out of town. The rehersal, ceremony and wedding was at the Harborside Ballroom in Newport Beach, CA. My bridemaids and family stayed at the Shorebreak Hotel in Huntington Beach the night before and had a wine tasting and slumber party. It was really awesome to see all the people I grew up with in the same room as my “after high school” friends. It was nice for everyone to meet and connect faces with names. It was also nice to spend time with my friends and family who had traveled over 3,000 miles. Nothing like pre-gaming your big day with some karaoke and a dance party.

How did you know your partner was “the one”?
He is an incredible person, my best friend and I couldn’t imagine life without him. When I wake up he is the first person I want to see and the last before I go to sleep.

Any advice you’d give new brides who are just getting started?
Breathe and enjoy. Things are bound to go different then you planned at some point and when that happens just breathe. Take the moments to enjoy your engagement, enjoy the planning process as when your day arrives it will fly by.

Did your wedding location hold a specific significance to you?

The WDCH didn’t really hold any significance but we wanted to have our wedding somewhere that was memorable. We felt that hotels, country, clubs, and beaches are so typical and we wanted something that our guests will be able to remember each time they pass it or see it in a picture.

What was the most meaningful part of your day?

The most meaningful part of my day would most definitely have to be our first look. And being able to have the “moment” for just the two of us, and take in that moment. I was just so excited to finally see each other and see his reaction!

Did anything funny or out of the ordinary happen?

Well, one of the ushers who was posted at our bridal room was crying when she saw me in my dress. She was the sweetest lady and she said that she felt so happy for us. I thought that was really out of the ordinary.

A funny moment would most definitely have to be my bouquet toss. I definitely judged the distance wrong and overthrew my bouquet. But we tried it a second time and got it right this time.

Tell us about your wedding details.

The day went by so fast that it’s crazy how much went into our wedding. We got married at the garden located at the WDCH and had our reception at the BP Hall inside. We put a lot of thought into the details of this wedding from making our own photobooth prop/backdrop/scrapbook/etc. We also did the “Up” thumbprint house and we designed our own seating chart. We scoured flea markets and thrift stores for props and signs. I definitely wish I could do this all over again!

How did you know your partner was “the one”?

I knew my partner was ” the one’ because we have been through so much. We have been together for over 5 years and we definitely knew we were meant to be. Growing up I’ve always had a long list of what my dream guy would be, and Frank definitely fulfilled 95% of that checklist! I’m so lucky to have found a guy like him and am thrilled to spend the rest of my life with him!

Any advice you’d give new brides who are just getting started?

Take it all in, the process, the engagement , the wedding, all of it. We were engaged for a year before we got married and even felt like that wasn’t enough time to plan a wedding. There are definitely stressful times but in the end when you’re on the dance floor with your husband, you realize how much it was all worth it. Do a lot of research before settling down for any one vendor. Don’t be afraid to ask for referral discounts. And be creative! And Michael’s will be your best friend with their weekly coupons!

An Austin, TX Autumn Backyard Wedding from Offbeat Bride

Monja and Todd got married at Austin’s Zilker Botanical Garden and then held their reception in their own backyard. Monja is a stationer, so the custom stationery, from their wedding invitations to their custom wedding logo, was all made by the bride. Almost every inch of this wedding was customized with fabulous design and thoughtful DIY projects. Check out these gorgeous photos from Whitney Lee Photography

Did your wedding location and date hold a special significance for you?

We’re outdoorsy people and wanted our wedding to be held in a beautiful, natural environment. We chose to have the ceremony under the majestic live oak trees at the Zilker Botanical Garden in Austin.  For our reception we wanted a home-grown feel, so we opted to have it in our backyard. We undertook a daunting landscaping project to create a beautiful space.

Tell us about the details of the day.

Just about everything was DIY. We really wanted our wedding to feel like it was “us” and incorporated as many handcrafted elements as possible. We were married in October; we love the colors and feel of autumn and used that to guide us in wedding décor: mason jars for drinks, canning jar vases, lots of burlap and jute, centerpieces with little baby pumpkins and gourds and cranberries. The pathway to the backyard was lined with shepherd’s hooks with hanging candlelit mason jar lanterns. Todd proposed while playing our favorite board game, Carcassonne, so we crafted our cake toppers to be in the shape of the wooden game pieces, and painted them to match our outfits.

Being a stationer, I wanted to have a lot of paper elements at the wedding. I designed the invitation suite (save-the-dates, invitations, rsvp cards, thank you notes) and all of the other paper products at the wedding: vow cards, ceremony and reading booklets, programs, menus, reception signage, our wedding banner. Todd is an avid rock climber, so we incorporated the figure-8 rope knot in our “wedding logo” – it worked as an ampersand and in the “we’re tying the knot!”context. But it wasn’t just about the décor, we also wanted our ceremony to be meaningful, so we wrote it ourselves. Rather than be married by a stranger, we asked our friend if he would become ordained and officiate the ceremony for us. He was amazing!

What was the most meaningful part of your day?

We are relatively new to Austin, so most of our guests were from out of town. It meant a lot to us that so many were able to travel here to be with us on our special day. But, truly, the entire day was meaningful: we celebrated the life we’ve had together and the life we will have together with some of the most special people in our lives.

Does it get any more meaningful than that?!

Did anything funny or out of the ordinary happen?

My name, Monja, comes from an old and obscure 60’s song. Todd surprised me after dinner with a personal rendition of the song complete with backup vocals, guitar and ukulele accompaniment, and a swanky Motown dance groove. What made it more surprising is that the song is in German!

Do you have any advice for couples planning their wedding?

Focus on the details well beforehand and then just let it all go and enjoy the day. Know that all of your planning will totally pay off and you will have an amazing day!
