For those of you planning a wedding with a yellow color scheme, pay attention because Lindsay and Michael are gonna’ show you how it’s done! Did your wedding location and date hold a special significance for you?

We were initially looking at wedding venues in New Jersey that were closer to Manhattan – some even had breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline.  However when we found Crystal Springs Resort in northern New Jersey, we fell in love with the idea that our friends and family could treat our wedding weekend as a little mini-vacation, an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.  Just by coincidence, we ended up getting married on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, giving our out-of-town guests even more reason to spend more than just a few hours with us!  I’m very glad we chose a location that was a little “away from it all,” surrounded by nature, and totally able to accommodate visiting guests who wanted to use our wedding as an excuse to escape.

Tell us about the details of the day.

During our wedding planning, Michael and I decided that we would do our best to make every moment in our day really mean something to us.  Neither one of us wanted to go through the motions of what people think a wedding has to be if at the end of it all, it didn’t mean a single thing to us!  So for example, we picked our own music — I walked down the aisle to Cat Power’s “I Found A Reason” and we walked back up the aisle as a married couple to a recording of “Glory Glory Dixieland” performed by my alma mater, the University of Georgia Redcoat Marching Band.  We crafted the specific language that we wanted to say in our vows, and we included two readings from two of our favorite authors, C.S. Lewis and Thich Nhat Hanh.  Oh, and our pastor preached nearly an entire sermon based on the movie “Groundhog Day.”  At the time, we didn’t exactly know she was going to do this, but we rolled with it, and now we will always laugh about it!  We made sure we had good food and plenty of it, and a good DJ — and the rest of the night pretty much took care of itself!  Individually, all these little details probably wouldn’t have caught anyone’s attention.  But when taken as a whole, people definitely noticed how all the little details added up to the bigger story of our love.

Did you create any DIY projects?

My husband, Michael, is a graphic designer so we knew from the very beginning that we wanted to design and really personalize all our printed materials.  We created our save-the-date and entire invitation package consisting of the invite, an itinerary, RSVP card, and envelopes.  We also designed and printed our program for the ceremony as well as our seating chart, and Michael created a special 18×24 poster that we treated as our guest book – we had it on display for everyone to sign at the reception.  Creating all our printed materials was not easy, but I LOVE how our designs turned out – we got so many compliments on how unique our designs were, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.  I also couldn’t have done it without Etsy – my jewelry, my bridesmaid’s jewelry, and our table numbers all came from various talented artists I found on Etsy!

What was the most meaningful part of your day?

Michael and I decided prior to the wedding, and with the help of the amazing Morgan Trinker, that we wanted to set up a moment to see each other before the ceremony.  I was always on the fence about whether I wanted to save that “first look” moment for the aisle, but looking back, I’m very glad we had a quiet, personal moment to ourselves before we were out in front of a big crowd.  Morgan set up an area away from friends, family, and even the rest of the bridal party for us to have our “first look.”  Michael was able to spin me around and notice small details about my hair and my dress that he would have missed had we been in front of a hundred pairs of eyes!  It was so nice to have a quiet moment together where we could really take each other in, relax, take a deep breath, and get ready for the rest of our big day.  I’d recommend this option to anyone.

Did anything funny or out of the ordinary happen?

Our pastor’s sermon went on… and on… and ON about the movie “Groundhog Day” starring Bill Murray.  We had never mentioned this movie to her prior to the wedding, and neither one of us are particularly fond of the movie.  Needless to say, when it became such a significant part of our wedding day, we were a bit stumped.  But we rolled with it, our guests were able to have a good chuckle, and NOW we will always have a special place in our hearts for “Groundhog Day.”

The bride, Kelly, and I have one thing in common: we both love green.  She and David did a great job of subtly infusing apple green throughout their wedding details.  The result is a gorgeously elegant spring event.  Check out this beautiful and simple wedding by Troy Grover Photographers, and read more on Kelly’s planning process below.

What was your vision for your wedding?
The vision I had for our wedding was exactly how it turned out. In fact, it exceeded all expectations I ever had! I wanted the ceremony to be meaningful and the reception to be fun! I started planning by choosing our colors, I knew I wanted to stick with traditional black and white and add an extra pop of color. I had seen apple-green paired with black and white before and knew it was exactly the color I wanted to add. Once I found my bridesmaid shoes I kept incorporating apple green in other aspects of the day. Our florist was amazing, she knew I was a girl with a specific vision on a budget and made it happen. She used white flowers with bright green accents throughout. The ceremony was light and springy and the reception brought that extra touch of elegance by adding the green lighting and incorporating a lot of candles in our centerpieces, cake table and candy table. Beyond that we knew that we wanted our wedding to be fun and memorable. We couldn’t have made that happen without the help of our amazing DJ, Eric Morales and MC, Trevor Penick. They got the party started like we knew they would and it didn’t stop until after midnight.

Did your wedding location hold a specific significance to you?
Anaheim Hills Golf Course was actually the first venue we checked out and we loved it, so we didn’t even look any further! I always pictured myself getting married on a Golf Course because I knew I’d make my dad proud since he is an avid golfer. I thought the ceremony location in front of the fountain was beautiful and we couldn’t have asked for a better ballroom for the reception.

What was the most meaningful part of your day?
This would have to be our ceremony. It was exactly what we had envisioned it to be. From start to finish the ceremony was very “us” with laughter, tears and joy. The intimacy of the location also made us feel the love from our friends and family who were there to witness. It was important to both of us for it to be meaningful and convey who we are, so we added a lot of personal touches to make it our own. Two of my grandparents were unable to be there, so for my bouquet I had our florist add a broach that my grandmother had given me that had a picture of her and my grandfather. We also had my Uncle do a reading titled “The Art of Marriage” which was beautiful and described everything a marriage should be.

Did anything funny or out of the ordinary happen?
One of the funnest parts of the day was surprising our bridal party and guests with our first dance. We started off with a slow dance to our song, “Let’s Stay Together” by Al Green and then had the DJ cut the music and go in to “It Takes Two” by Rob Base. It was so fun and set the tone for the rest of the evening. After that I’m pretty sure everyone knew it was going to be a fun night!

Tell us details of the events surrounding the wedding as well.
We were both so lucky to have surrounded ourselves with such amazing friends and family. My bridesmaids hosted a beautiful bridal shower brunch for me with champagne, bellini cocktails, and delicious breakfast souffles. My mom also hosted a family bridal shower for me incorporating our wedding colors and my favorite food, italian. My bachelorette party was such a blast! We rented suites out in Palm Desert, lounged by the pool during the day and played fun, sassy party games and hit the town at night.

How did you know your partner was “the one”?
From our first date I knew that David was the one for me. They say when you know, you just do and I never believed that until I met him. He’s my best friend and everything I could ever want and need in a partner. He motivates me to be my best and believes in me more than anyone. We laugh and have so much fun together!

Any advice you’d give new brides who are just getting started?
Don’t sweat the small stuff… it’s just not worth it. Your day will be what you make of it, if everyone sees you and your groom enjoying your day, then they will be right there with ya! As long as there is good music, family and friends you will have the best day. Think positive throughout the planning process and choose good vendors that you can trust will make your day everything you imagined it would be!

A Very Cool and Uniquely Glam Riverside Wedding by Allebach Photography

I look through a lot of real weddings each week, and so when one stands out and I keep thinking back to it, I know that it is one I have to share. Siobhan and Kevin’s wedding has great details and a unique vibe, but what makes this wedding so absolutely cool is how much fun everyone is clearly having! My favorite is the unbridled joy evident in the photos of the reception where not only the couple, but also the guests, are having a blast.  Allebach Photography has done an amazing job capturing this very special day, and keep reading for Siobhan’s thoughts on her wedding planning.

What was your vision for the day?
My husband, Kevin, and I went through a number of different ideas of what our day would be like, where it would be, even when it would be, and early on in the planning process we felt like we had somehow lost sight of what we wanted. So, we went back to the drawing board and started from scratch, which was probably the best thing we could’ve done.

Once we discovered the Vesper Boathouse and decided on that for our venue, we decided that we wanted our day to have a healthy dose of old-school glam, modern quirks and just be a ton of fun. Have you ever gone out dancing, and you end up dancing so hard that you’re pouring sweat and fighting to catch your breath, and you don’t care how awful you look despite the makeup running down your face, because you’re having so much fun you feel like you’re flying? Yeah, that’s what we were aiming for.

We did a couple of DIY projects for the wedding: For our centerpieces, we provided the florist with a bunch of assorted vases we’d collected from thrift shops. We also collected some assorted bowls from the same shops, which we filled with fruit (also used as centerpieces). Lastly, my mom collected a bunch of vintage hardcover books in different books to place on each table under the flowers & fruit bowls.

My mom also did a lot of DIY stuff for the wedding – she did a couple of flower arrangements for the mantels around the venue. She also made paper confetti and garlands that were used to decorate the venue, featuring our names, the date, and cute details. She also made some super-cute trivia cards about me & Kevin, which were placed on all of the tables. My mom is super craftsy and was VERY eager to help, so she definitely brought a lot to the table when it comes to that!

Another “project” that we really did ourselves was the ceremony – we worked with my grandmother, who’s an ordained minister, to put together our vows and the ceremony, and it was super meaningful for us to have that. My grandmother was also very honored to marry us, so it was great that we were able to keep it “all in the family,” so to speak!

Did your wedding location hold a specific significance to you?
Philadelphia is where Kevin & I really established our roots, so we wanted our day to be as much a celebration of the city we’d come to love as it was about our love for each other. A coworker mentioned that events are often held at the city’s boathouses near Fairmount Park – one look and we were in.

What was the most meaningful part of your day?
Everybody probably says this, but it’s hard to pick one! I have three parts that were really above all else, though. Our vows were amazing – my grandmother officiated the ceremony, and it was like we could just feel the love radiating from everyone around us as we exchanged our vows. The first dance was also an incredibly moving moment – we danced to Deathcab for Cutie’s “I Will Follow You Into the Dark,” and I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house. (My poor father ended up crying like a baby!) Another extremely meaningful moment is when my father presented my husband with the hospital gown he wore when I was born. Kevin & I had no idea he was planning this, and it was so incredibly meaningful and moving – again, everybody started crying their eyes out!

Did anything funny or out of the ordinary happen?
The bagpipes!! My father’s been playing since I was a kid, and I also invited a number of family friends who play to the wedding. I don’t know why I didn’t expect this to happen, but they gave an impromptu performance in the middle of the reception and brought the house down! My father also gave quite a comedy routine, kind of a take on the Bud Light “Real Men of Genius” ads, saluting my husband & me for being a great couple.

Tell us details of the events surrounding the wedding.

Since a good portion of our friends & family would be coming into Philly from out of the area (most of Kevin’s family is actually from Niagara Falls, NY), we wanted to make the best of the holiday weekend. We did the bachelor & bachelorette parties Friday evening (the details of which I’ll leave out for our families’ sake, haha), and we did the rehearsal dinner that Saturday at North Bowl in Northern Liberties – which was a total blast!! Our youngest family members especially enjoyed it, but it was great seeing even some of the older ones joining in on the fun and bowling.

After the wedding ceremony, we also went out to the Moshulu for DJ Deejay’s MMP vs. BBG (Madonna/Michael/Prince vs. Britney/Beyonce/Gaga) dance party, which was AWESOME. I changed into more of a party dress, and we went out with most of the wedding party, some cousins & friends in their 20s, and even my dad joined us for the dance party on the boat. We capped off the night with cheesesteaks and cheese fries at Pat’s before coming home super late. I know our friends & younger family members kept the party going back at the hotel, but we were so exhausted that we just went back to our suite. All in all, it was a great weekend!

How did you know your partner was “the one”?

Not too long after we started dating, I went through a bunch of devastating events one right after the other – two deaths in the family, a personal health scare, academic problems, job problems, and I even totaled my car. And you know what Kevin did? He stood right by me and helped me get through it – that’s how I knew he was the person I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. When things got hard – and did they ever get hard – he was there to support me and encourage me to keep pushing on. Thankfully we got through that, and we’ve been each other’s biggest cheerleaders ever since.

Any advice you’d give new brides who are just getting started?
BREATHE!! No, seriously, take a step back and give yourself a big breather. See how good that feels?! In this day and age, it’s so easy to get caught up in the details and stress yourself over planning and forget that this is supposed to be a party! My husband and I definitely made an effort to remind ourselves of that and try our best not to sweat the small stuff, so to speak – and trust me, that wasn’t easy! Another big piece of advice that I’ll give – don’t be afraid to ask friends or family for help. So many people will be happy to help you with any little tasks you can divvy up, and I had people come through with things I hadn’t even thought of. (Like the toiletries basket my maid-of-honor showed up with – the thought hadn’t even crossed my mind, and it was a great touch for the ladies’ room at the reception!) Lastly, do your best to put each other first. You’re going to have tons of friends, family, hell even strangers giving their opinions on what you should or shouldn’t do for your wedding – forget them. (Obviously family is important, but only to an extent!) Rather than trying to please everyone else, focus on what will make the two of you happy and go with that, and everyone else will end up being happy too.
