We wanted it to look like us – we didn’t want it to look manufactured or standard in any way. We wanted it to be eclectic, but simple and classy at the same time. Ultimately our own aesthetic sense and style were the inspirations, as well as the landscape around us.

Tell us about the bridal attire:
The bridesmaids wore simple navy chiffon dresses and the groomsmen wore navy suits. The groom wore a pale grey Lanvin suit and the bride wore a vintage-inspired chantilly lace Vera Wang gown with velvet and chiffon floral bloom belt.

Favorite design element of your big day:
We decided not to have wedding colors which allowed for the design to be free and organic. We had lots of herbs and succulents, as opposed to just the standard flowers. We had lavender, wheat, sage and rosemary mixed in with a random assortment of succulents and white blooms. It was elegant, yet original. We also loved that we used large vintage-inspired metal numbers to mark the tables instead of numbers written on paper.

What advice would you give to a couple planning their wedding?
Excellent photographers and videographers are just a MUST. The day is over so quickly and then the pictures and the video are all you have left to remember. Make sure you find people who will capture the day the way you want to remember it.

What’s your favorite part of the wedding?
I have to put three:
1. We wrote our own ceremony with our officiant (who is a friend) and our own vows. It made the ceremony incredibly special and personal.

2. Our friends who are puppeteers created a simple, elegant, hilarious and touching puppet show of a Shel Silverstein book as a reading for the wedding. We picked the book because it was one of the first books I learned to read out loud, but it was also a love letter that I gave to Jordan the first year we were dating.

3. My father /daughter dance. I spent the weekend before the wedding at my father’s childhood home in Texas with my father and my grandparents. My father and I choreographed the dance together on their front porch. The dance was to Singin’ in the Rain – my favorite childhood movie.

Any specific reasons behind certain choices you made for your wedding? Maybe flowers that were your mom’s favorite, or your first dance song was the first song you ever heard together, that kind of thing?
We got married on my grandmother’s birthday. She passed away about 7 years ago and it was a nice way to make her a part of the day and every anniversary to come. The pillow that the ringbearer carried was also connected to my grandmother – it was a small pillow that she made out of a quilt that her grandmother had made. My mother tied ribbons to it and patched up a hole with extra lace from the bottom of my dress – it looked perfect. Also, the delicious banana wedding cake with rich chocolate frosting was made from Jordan’s grandmother’s famous recipe and it was a nice way to remember his grandmother as well.

Tell me something about your photographer, Viera Photographics, that you absolutely loved:
They were great for us because they caught the unique and unexpected images of our special day. Any photographer can take posed pictures, but it takes real artists to capture personality, movement and color the way they did. The photographs are works of art and we couldn’t ask for anything better than that!

Willy and Ashley’s Engagement Shoot at Union Station in Los Angeles

How did you meet?
Willy and I met in college. I had decided to transfer schools and moved up to San Francisco and, consequently, we lost contact. We ran into each other years later at a local bar in the same area we went to school. Convinced he had a thing for my best friend, I didn’t give him the time of day. Next thing you know, he invited my friend and me to a Christmas party… and, after a few drinks, he was holding my hand. I haven’t wanted to let go since…

Did you know when you met, that he was “the ONE?”
As cliche as it sounds, I knew Willy was “the one”. The timing was perfect. We were both at a stage in our life where we were comfortable being alone and weren’t actively seeking out a relationship with anyone. There is a difference between wanting and needing a companion. I also knew he was “the one” because he reminds me of my father in so many ways.

Tell us about your fiance.
He appreciates the simple things in life. He can spend hours on the beach digging up crab holes. He’s my best friend and his face lights up when he sees me first thing in the morning, every morning.

Share with us the “proposal story!”
We spent Christmas in 2007 in the Dominican Republic. Willy and I got into the topic of engagement and marriage. More and more the topic had been presenting itself. I told Willy that he shouldn’t feel any pressure, that when he was ready, I was ready and the answer would surely be yes. Looking back on it now, I had felt it coming and truthfully was eager to relieve pressure on both sides. I didn’t want him to go to extravagant lengths to tell me everything he’s already shown me. I didn’t need him to get down on his knee – after all it was a dirt road – only to propose what we both were already committed to. I thought it was coming on Christmas, so I felt it was my job to say all of this prior, so that when it did come, it’d be simple, carefree, and natural. And in a moment’s notice I got everything I wanted and suspected, when I least expected it. I took a sip from my drink and a glance over at the water only to turn back and find a ring awaiting me. We both shed a few tears. He had been carrying the ring with him all the while, waiting for the right moment.

Describe your ring.
My ring is from 1840. It has a citrine stone in the middle with a gold foil wrap backing, giving it a golden appearance. The stone is sandwiched between a small pearl on each side.

When was the wedding?
August 29th, 2009.

Which one is your favorite engagement session photo, and why?
I couldn’t choose; they are all fantastic.

I love that their passion for photography extends beyond merely wedding photography.

Troy and Betty in Napa Valley, CA

So, the couple decided to have their wedding in Napa Valley because of the rolling vineyards, the oak trees, the pond and a farmhouse that reminded them of New Zealand, where the movie was filmed. Dennis and Jaime, of Viera Photographics, captured the day’s events and details.

Troy and Betty give us an inside look at their wedding day…

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story:
Across the CD aisles at Amoeba Records in San Francisco.

What was the theme | design inspiration for your wedding?
We didn’t want a kitschy “Lord of the Rings” themed wedding so we settled on an atmosphere of vintage & pastoral.

Tell us about the bridal attire:
My lace strapless dress with a puddle train had the simplicity and elegance I wanted to project. My vintage drop earrings and bracelet gave me the glamour and the silk custom-made flower in my hair provided the romance. And the lace pumps produced (but discontinued) by All Black were graciously custom manufactured by the company upon my request. I was elated when the shoes arrived!

Favorite design element of your big day:
I loved the bow ties that my husband, ring bearers, and the flower boy wore! It was classic!

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding?
I’m a bit compulsive by nature so I had to resist researching everything to death and just make a decision!

What advice would you give to a couple planning their wedding?
Have fun with the process and do things together! I came up with the idea of the lantern centerpieces but midway through the project, I lost steam. My husband finished it off and they were beautiful! Insist on certain design elements that are most important to you but relax on others. Delegate some projects to your significant other. I gave him creative license on making signs for the wedding and I was astonished at how creative he could be!

Whether in the “toast,” or in a ceremony reading, or just in passing, what was the best advice someone gave you at the wedding?
Work on communication!

What’s your most favorite part of the wedding?
My favorite part of the wedding was when my brother and sister sang at our wedding. I was so proud of them and honored too!

Any specific reasons behind certain choices you made for your wedding? Maybe flowers that were your mom’s favorite or your first dance song was the first song you ever heard together…that kind of thing?
Almost everything about our wedding was personalized. I was really adamant that the food was exceptional since we both love food and cooking so we were really happy to see people enjoy the food!

Tell me something about your photographer.
Dennis has a great sense of goofy humor which relaxed us and made us actually enjoy the experience of being photographed. Dennis and Jaime of Viera Photographics are incredibly talented photographers. We are thrilled by the pictures!
