Martha and Rob’s Florida Farm Wedding by Justin DeMutiis Photography

bride-groom-in-front-of-house

This Florida farm wedding is just delightful! Martha is a graphic designer, so she created their ga-ga-ga-gorgeous invitation suite. This radiant couple is brought to us courtesy of Justin DeMutiis, one of my personal faves. Check out all of the pretty details that a farm wedding can bring: a “rustic” wedding cake, charming wildflowers, and getting married under a giant tree!

Lodge-Style Inspiration Board

collage-two

Okay, so go with me on this, but this inspiration board is the result of a recent viewing of “The Shining.”  Now, I understand, of course, the last thing you probably want to use as inspiration for your wedding is a horror movie. But….if you take out the whole Jack Nicholson with an axe thing, and the super creepy girls in the hallway, you have a pretty spectacular setting for a lodge wedding (like I said, just go with me on this. It is the day after Halloween and I have a Smarties hangover). I heart lodge weddings and their fun details like antique Thermoses, Pendelton wool blankets, national-park style decor, and all of the natural elements brought in.

Danna & Brian’s Fort Worth, TX Museum Wedding from Brooke Schwab Photography

I love Texas weddings (little known fact about me: I was born in College Station, Tx. Go Aggies!). And this wedding is absolutely a perfect example as to why. Check out all of the gorgeous creamy neutral colors, thoughtful centerpieces that were a result of fun family time, and just admire Danna’s dress (I have been drooling over it all morning). This amazingness was captured by Brooke Schwab. Cheers!

Did your wedding location hold a specific significance to you?

Although we wanted a destination wedding, the most important thing was to have all of our family and friends join us on our big day.  Being from Dallas, we looked to neighboring city, Fort Worth, as the perfect embodiment of convenience and “get away.”

Our reception was held at Tadao Ando’s Modern Art Museum, which is one of, if not the most beautiful, space I’ve ever seen.  My fiancé and I love art, had many wonderful memories here and wanted a location that expressed the grandeur and elegance of the day.  We also had a lot of faith that staff at the Modern would run the event seamlessly – which the more than achieved.

What was the most meaningful part of your day?

Our photographer Brooke arranged for my fiancé and I to meet privately before heading over to the chapel.  Seeing one another all dressed up, ready to be together forever, is something I’ll always cherish.  It also made for my favorite photos of the day. That quiet time to reaffirm our love and ride over to the chapel together helped calm nerves and was a lot of fun.

Did anything funny or out of the ordinary happen?

The one thing that you NEVER want to happen on your wedding day, especially for an outdoor reception, happened – it started raining. I’ll never forget sprinting with my wedding party and photographers back inside during photos.  The rain ended up stopping an hour before the ceremony, but not before our contingency plan had been put into effect.  We laughed it off, trusted our vendors and everything turned out even better than envisioned.

Tell us details of the events surrounding the wedding as well.

In order to create the centerpieces we wanted, my mother, mother-law-to-be and I spent a few weekends venturing to antique stores looking for glass jars and bottles.  We had a ball rummaging, laughing and becoming closer. It’s amazing to see two families come together and become best friends.

How did you know your partner was “the one”?

Over the years of knowing one another, and then dating, we became best friends and good at reading one another and communicating.  It wasn’t until our first overseas trip together that I “knew.”  A good travel companion – one you can rely on, share experiences with, learn with, be vulnerable with, laugh with and get out of tough spots with – is the mark of someone you can spend your life with.

Any advice you’d give new brides who are just getting started?

I can trace the outright success of my wedding to four things: (1) My binder – I kept an organized binder that I filled with images of my “personal vision” as well as updated vendor contacts, quotes and finances. It helped me stay sane and made it easy to communicate what I wanted when I wasn’t able to do so verbally.  (2) Being myself – I found it so easy to get caught up in other people’s weddings – those that I saw on mywedding.com and various magazines.  It’s easy to lose yourself in all of the details or go along with what a vendor recommends.  Use those elements to make something truly your own.  Don’t forget to be you.  (3) Delegate, delegate, delegate!  Don’t be afraid to let go – just a little. (4) “Free” week – We made sure everything was executed and all decisions were made one week prior to the wedding day.  So, when those last minute things reared their head, which they did, we had the bandwidth and a clear head to deal with them.  More importantly, it gave us more time to hang out with all the friends and family who were coming in town.

Jennifer & Jesse’s Countrified Louisiana Wedding from Offbeat Bride

groom-smiling-at-bride-during-first-dance

Jennifer and Jesse had a countryfied wedding with lots of awesome style and details. Their Breaux Bridge, Louisiana wedding was an outdoor ceremony followed by a party at Buck & Johnny’s Showroom with the cutest little wedding cake ever! Speaking of cute, Jennifer’s wedding outfit was awesome — a short wedding dress with rocking cowboy boots.
And the groom was just as stylish in a bow tie (bow ties are cool!).

Did your wedding location and date hold a special significance for you?

We were initially looking at wedding venues in New Jersey that were closer to Manhattan – some even had breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline.  However when we found Crystal Springs Resort in northern New Jersey, we fell in love with the idea that our friends and family could treat our wedding weekend as a little mini-vacation, an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.  Just by coincidence, we ended up getting married on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, giving our out-of-town guests even more reason to spend more than just a few hours with us!  I’m very glad we chose a location that was a little “away from it all,” surrounded by nature, and totally able to accommodate visiting guests who wanted to use our wedding as an excuse to escape.

Tell us about the details of the day.

During our wedding planning, Michael and I decided that we would do our best to make every moment in our day really mean something to us.  Neither one of us wanted to go through the motions of what people think a wedding has to be if at the end of it all, it didn’t mean a single thing to us!  So for example, we picked our own music — I walked down the aisle to Cat Power’s “I Found A Reason” and we walked back up the aisle as a married couple to a recording of “Glory Glory Dixieland” performed by my alma mater, the University of Georgia Redcoat Marching Band.  We crafted the specific language that we wanted to say in our vows, and we included two readings from two of our favorite authors, C.S. Lewis and Thich Nhat Hanh.  Oh, and our pastor preached nearly an entire sermon based on the movie “Groundhog Day.”  At the time, we didn’t exactly know she was going to do this, but we rolled with it, and now we will always laugh about it!  We made sure we had good food and plenty of it, and a good DJ — and the rest of the night pretty much took care of itself!  Individually, all these little details probably wouldn’t have caught anyone’s attention.  But when taken as a whole, people definitely noticed how all the little details added up to the bigger story of our love.

Did you create any DIY projects?

My husband, Michael, is a graphic designer so we knew from the very beginning that we wanted to design and really personalize all our printed materials.  We created our save-the-date and entire invitation package consisting of the invite, an itinerary, RSVP card, and envelopes.  We also designed and printed our program for the ceremony as well as our seating chart, and Michael created a special 18×24 poster that we treated as our guest book – we had it on display for everyone to sign at the reception.  Creating all our printed materials was not easy, but I LOVE how our designs turned out – we got so many compliments on how unique our designs were, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.  I also couldn’t have done it without Etsy – my jewelry, my bridesmaid’s jewelry, and our table numbers all came from various talented artists I found on Etsy!

What was the most meaningful part of your day?

Michael and I decided prior to the wedding, and with the help of the amazing Morgan Trinker, that we wanted to set up a moment to see each other before the ceremony.  I was always on the fence about whether I wanted to save that “first look” moment for the aisle, but looking back, I’m very glad we had a quiet, personal moment to ourselves before we were out in front of a big crowd.  Morgan set up an area away from friends, family, and even the rest of the bridal party for us to have our “first look.”  Michael was able to spin me around and notice small details about my hair and my dress that he would have missed had we been in front of a hundred pairs of eyes!  It was so nice to have a quiet moment together where we could really take each other in, relax, take a deep breath, and get ready for the rest of our big day.  I’d recommend this option to anyone.

Did anything funny or out of the ordinary happen?

Our pastor’s sermon went on… and on… and ON about the movie “Groundhog Day” starring Bill Murray.  We had never mentioned this movie to her prior to the wedding, and neither one of us are particularly fond of the movie.  Needless to say, when it became such a significant part of our wedding day, we were a bit stumped.  But we rolled with it, our guests were able to have a good chuckle, and NOW we will always have a special place in our hearts for “Groundhog Day.”
