Widely reported to be the most popular wedding date ever, July 7, 2007 is quickly approaching. Aside from the fact that it's the first Saturday in July, which is a popular time to get married anyway (vacation time is pretty easy to come by and good weather is pretty much guaranteed at this time of year - although it can be HOT…just ask my husband, who still complains about being drenched with sweat in his rented polyester tux during our outdoor July wedding), why is this date so incredibly sought after by brides and grooms of the moment? Some practically minded ladies are hoping that their husbands will be unable to forget their anniversary date, while many others consider seven to be a lucky number for a variety of reasons. I'd hazard a guess that there are more than a few couples out there who simply want their wedding date to look like a winning slot machine…and why not? If you think you've hit the jackpot with your mate, it seems fitting to celebrate on this day. But where did the number seven get its significance?
Seven is considered a lucky number in many Western cultures, and also in Japanese culture. Additionally, it is a prominent number is Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Some examples of its worldwide importance include the following: There are seven days of the week, seven notes on a musical scale, seven wonders of the Ancient World, seven Chakras, and seven candles lit in the Kinara during the African-American celebration of Kwanzaa, which is a seven day holiday. Also, there are seven deadly sins…some of which can make you feel pretty lucky, in fact! But watch out my fellow sinners, because there are also seven points on a sheriff's star so take it easy with the transgressions that can cause Johnny Law to come after you. Perhaps the most compelling reason to consider this date lucky for love is that symbolically, as characterized in important texts such as the Bible, it represents the union of man and woman because the number for women is four and the number for men is three.
Whatever you believe, know this: wedding venues and vendors are all but booked solid across the country and beyond on July 7 of this year. And don't think they didn't notice that this ultra-popular date is particularly sought after, since many of them are jacking up their service prices like it's Valentine's Day and they're holding the last bouquet of roses in existence. So don't fret if you have been unable to book your event for this auspicious day; you'll probably save yourself a few bucks in the long run, and you can spend them on your honeymoon where you're pretty darn sure to get lucky anyway (wink, wink). And if you are recently engaged and looking for a memorable summer wedding date but 7/7/07 is creeping up too quickly to manage, consider 6/7/08 or 8/8/08. I'll bet the stars will shine on you then, too!
