Ask Nicole: Guest List Dilemma

Question:

Dear Nicole,

Am I obligated to invite my friend's new boyfriend to our wedding? We would like to keep the guest list to a minimum, and frankly I'm not even sure if I like the guy. Obviously, if they had been dating for a while I would invite him, but since it's not yet a very serious relationship, do I have to invite him?

Jo from Georgia

Response:

Dear Jo,

I have a feeling you already know the answer to this, which is: no. You are not obligated to invite acquaintances, new boyfriends, etc. In fact, I personally feel you are not obligated to invite anyone you don't want at your wedding. Having said that, you must prepare for any fall-out that could occur because of this decision. In your case, Jo, I would address your invitations to only the people you would like at the wedding. You may consider telling your friends that you and your fiancé have decided to keep the wedding small and will only invite very close friends and family and their spouses/fiancés. Most people will understand, especially considering the cost of weddings today. Hope this helps! Good luck!

For Better or Worse,
Nicole {Matrimonial Maven}
