Question:
Dear Nicole,
My fiancé’s family lives on the East Coast, my family lives in the Midwest, and we live on the West Coast. We are struggling with where to have our wedding—so much so that we are thinking of either eloping or not getting married at all. If we have the wedding near our home, a lot of important family members and friends will not be able to make the trip. Do you have any suggestions for us?
Nancy from San Diego, CA
Response:
Dear Nancy,
This seems to be an issue for many couples today. It can be a frustrating task to accommodate both families and respective friends. Here is my advice:
First: Have the wedding where you and your fiancé want it to be. Whether it’s in Africa, California, or the North Pole—if it’s where you want to get married—go for it. Take some time with your honey to think about where you want your wedding to take place. Do your best to separate what you want from what your family and friends want. It is important to create the wedding of your dreams not the wedding of your family’s dreams. Having said that, I know it is important to share this day with your family and friends—so make sure you take this into consideration.
Second: If you choose to get married in a place that presents a difficulty for friends and family to attend, you have a couple of options:
- Behold the Traveling Wedding Reception: This is a very popular option for the geographically challenged couples of today. Have your main wedding ceremony and reception at your desired location and then plan a casual celebration in each of your hometown locations. This way, all friends and families have a chance to celebrate with you and give you lots of presents!
- Play Favorites: Well, not exactly, but consider having the wedding either near your family’s location or his. Remember to stay out of obligatory decision- making, but if one location seems desirable to you, then great!
- Meet in the Middle: How about having the wedding between the East Coast and the Midwest? That isn’t too far for anyone to travel—except you. Enlist your friends and families to help research a mini-destination location between the respective towns.
Hope this gives you and your fiancé a good place to start! Good luck with wedding planning!
For Better or Worse,
Nicole {Matrimonial Maven}
