mywedding Planner: Do-It-Yourself Stationery

Your wedding stationery is of utmost importance because it is a direct reflection of your event’s style and theme. Your invitations and/or save-the-date cards are the first site of your wedding theme you guests will have; therefore, this is an area where you want to give some thought and planning.

Many of my brides are going the “do-it-yourself” (DIY) route when it comes to wedding stationery. When I say stationery, I mean invitations, programs, menu cards, place cards, thank you notes, and direction cards. I find that many brides may not be aware of all the work that goes into making your own wedding stationery. Just like budgeting, there are some things that need to be thought out before you go full force into the DIY process.

First, it can take a long time to hunt down your supplies, plan your design, and print, cut, and assemble your materials. Remember: time is money…even if it's your time. While you may be saving a bit of money by doing it yourself, it may cost you a lot of time and stress.

Second, do the research and make sure you have a design scheme in mind. With the advent of envelopments, a myriad of vellums, and gorgeous handmade paper - there is a lot to choose from today. Do an internet search and you’ll see what I mean. A good thing to remember is that the more specialty items you use, such as vellums, special ties and ribbons…the more your materials will cost, and the longer it's going to take you to assemble. It adds up quickly, so make sure to plan far enough in advance, buy only a few supplies initially, and put your projects together so you know if the design works for you.

Third, it is very important you have the time to do this project right. If you decide you want to DIY, start 6-8 months early and put samples together. This will minimize the amount of scrambling and headaches in the latter stages of planning.

Many commercial stationery companies have come out with very nice, yet affordable options for couples who do not have the time to DIY. Google "inexpensive wedding stationary" and you will be overwhelmed with possibilities!

If you have the time and inclination to go the DIY route…go for it! I have seen many brides create the most beautiful invitations. Just be sure you do your homework first!
