How To Make Your Wedding Day Rock

Attention grooms: Congratulations! You’re getting married! And no, you can’t pick the flowers or the tablecloths, but you can make yourself useful and make your mark by putting together a song playlist for the ages. You are the front man to this bash and you mustn’t let down the crowd! Choose songs that honor your special day, as well as celebrate the rock star within. Include your bride-to-be’s favorite songs, and of course the songs that you both get down too. There’s no need to resort to the ‘Electric Slide’, you can choose songs that you actually like. To that effect, we’ve put together a list of songs that will please your inner rocker as well as get your wedding guests on the dance floor. There are songs for everyone and every mood. We hope it sparks ideas for you’re very own wedding playlist!

Rock/Pop: Because This Isn’t Your Mother’s Wedding.

No one ever said you can’t rock out on your wedding day. Think outside the box and include some songs you actually like.

White Wedding - Billy Idol – Billy Idol is the ultimate rocker AND he wrote a song about getting married. Seems like a no-brainer to us.

Beautiful Day - U2 – This is a perfect song to celebrate one of the happiest days of your life and to celebrate your inner rock star to boot.

Better Together - Jack Johnson – Check out the lyrics and you’ll see why this song is perfect for your wedding.

Soul/R&B: Because You Need to Get Your Groove On.

Groovin’ on the dance floor can definitely get you groovin’ in the bedroom later!

Rock With You - Michael Jackson – No modern American wedding reception is complete without a couple of MJ songs.

Let’s Stay Together - Al Green – Al Green’s sultry, romantic groove is always a hit with the ladies.

Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing - Stevie Wonder – Take Stevie’s advice and don’t worry about anything (except having a good time!).

Dance Music: Because Let’s Face It—You Need All The Help You Can Get In This Department.

Everyone and their mom will be out on the dance floor when these songs hit the reception. Even if your best move is ‘the running man.’ Uncle Charlie will probably be doing the ‘worm!’ So no need to worry!

Hey Ya! - OutKast – You’re grandparents might have to plug their ears, but this is a sure hit among the younger crowd.

Get This Party Started - P!nk – Title is self-explanatory.

Harder Better Faster Stronger - Daft Punk – Quite possibly one of the best dance songs ever made. If you don’t believe us then watch this YouTube video. Take notes.

Classic Romantic Love Songs: Because It’s Your Wedding, Silly!

Of course a few sappy love songs would be appropriate for your wedding reception. Forget “Unchained Melody” lover boy! These classic romantic love songs should do the trick!

These Arms of Mine - Otis Redding – Just try not to make googly eyes at each other during this song—we dare you!

They Way You Look Tonight - Frank Sinatra – Play this one at your wedding and later at your 50th wedding anniversary! Totally romantic!

Crazy Love - Van Morrison – Van. Need we say more?

Country: Because Without Your Reception, ‘Achy-Breaky Heart’ Would Never Get Air Time!

No seriously, there is something to be said about an actual good country song. One that doesn't involve a dying dog or a pick-up truck can have a nice, romantic feel to it. Try out one of these songs to throw off your top 40 playlist.

I Walk the Line - Johnny Cash – Now that you’re married it’s time to walk the straight and narrow. Take it from Johnny. Heh heh.

Baby, Now That I’ve Found You - Alison Krauss – This is a total chick song—you’re sure to win her over with this one.

Crazy - Willie Nelson – No country mix is complete with out good ol’ Willie.

Indie: Because You Are Too Cool Not To.

While Indie Rock isn’t well known to inspire and uplift the masses, we did find a few romantic and even danceable songs for your hipster pleasure.

I Will Follow You Into the Dark - Death Cab for Cutie – A song for the Romeo-and-Juliet-type tragic romantics.

Pink Moon - Nick Drake – You’ll feel like you’re in the movie Garden State — and that was a super cool love story!

Close to Me - The Cure – This may be The Cure’s only uplifting dance song!

No Reception Can Go Without: Because We Said So.

This is a fact my friend! It’s hard not to get cliché with these songs—because they really do get the party happening! Plus it gives you an excuse to make goofy singing faces at each other on the dance floor.

Celebration - Kool and the Gang – Alright, everyone gather around, all together as loud as you can, “Ceelll-e-brate good times, c’mon…let’s celebrate!”

We Are Family - Sister Sledge – Runner-up to “I Will Survive” is this anthem for your bride and her all her girlfriends! Watch the chicks rock out to this one!

Earth Wind & Fire - September – Everyone loves this song! Play this to get their booties shakin’.

Music for the Old Folks: Because They Paid For The Wedding.

While your wedding is undoubtedly all about you, it would be nice to play a few tunes for the ones who made you in the first place!

Son of a Preacher Man — Dusty Springfield – Although this song was revived by the Pulp Fiction soundtrack in the 90’s your parents will never know.

Johnny B. Goode — Chuck Berry – An ode to Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future…air guitars are totally acceptable!

You Send Me — Sam Cooke – This will take your folks back to their high school prom.

So there you go—a good place to start! FYI—many couples are DJ’ing their own weddings today by using their iPods. If that’s too stressful, you could do part of the reception to save a little cash. But either way it’s a good idea to give your DJ a list like this with your song preferences. And don’t forget to include the songs you DON’T want the DJ to play. Nothing’s worse than having to listen to one of your least favorite songs at your own wedding.

Happy listening!
