Spring has arrived. Here in the San Francisco Bay area, Mother Nature has presented us with a stunning array of plants and flowers. The daffodil, poppy, tulip, magnolia and iris compete for attention with the flowering plum trees that line each block. It's a beautiful time to have a garden wedding. And (not to rub it in) the temperature has hovered around 70 degrees lately. It’s the perfect weather for an outdoor ceremony.
Even if you're not expecting perfect weather, spring flowers and colors can put you in tune with the symbolic significance of the season. Spring is a time associated with renewal, hope, abundance and growth. This year, March 20 was the vernal equinox--when day and night are in balance, and for another three months the days grow longer and longer. It's a time for planting seeds and looking at new possibilities. How perfect for the start of a new life in a new identity—as wife or as husband.
As you think about what spring means to you, perhaps you may find readings or rituals to add to your ceremony to go with this theme. For example, the phrase, “tying the knot” has its origins in the Celtic ceremony of handfasting, a ceremony typically held in the spring. Actually used for the betrothal, you can use a variation of this custom to add a touch of spring to your wedding. Centuries ago, a cord was used to bind the couple together at the wrist. You may use brightly colored ribbons, using one for each vow, have your officiant wrap you both together during the blessing or wrap your wrists before a wine ceremony in which you both drink from one cup.
Other ways to incorporate the essence of spring into your ceremony might be to use the pastel eggs available at Easter as a table or cake decoration. Hand out packets of wildflower seeds as favors, or weave colorful ribbons and flowers into your hair. Get acquainted with whimsy and enjoy your spring wedding!
