This next mistake is a behavior that we must practice in all relationships. It's one of self control and patience!
Mistake #5: Getting Defensive with your MIL
Just say you've misplaced a box of tea you just purchased, and under your breath say, "Where the heck did I put that box? They must have upped and walked away on their own!" Immediately your MIL may mistakenly think you are accusing her of moving them from their last known location, and with a self-protective, "Don't look at ME! I did nothing!"
Solution: Claim Short Term Memory Loss.
Control rolling your eyes and uttering definsively, "Did I say you took them?" Rather, in a pleasant tone, simply reply with a light-hearted," Oh, darn, I am just so forgetful lately! Last week I found my keys in the fridge - short term memory!" Don't bite her head off, as you might normally, when you get a smarty pants reply like she gave you!
Then take a deep breath, and use a different box of tea if you just can't seem to find the one you just bought. Graciously offer your MIL a cup, of course you'll already have her favorite flavor of tea on stock right?
Good Luck!!
