The story begins in December 2006 at a fine establishment called Jackrabbit Supper Club located in Scottsdale, Arizona. I was out for a night of cocktails with some of my buddies. While taking in some of the live entertainment at Jackrabbit, Katie's close friend and bridesmaid Britney came up to me and started a conversation. Britney and I chatted for a while and Britney was able to talk me into buying her a couple drinks. It turns out that Katie was there at Jackrabbit that night but she was relaxing at a table with her other friends. Katie and I never met that night.
The story picks back up in mid January 2007 at Devils Martini in North Scottsdale. Katie was out with Britney again and some other friends. I was out with some buddies. I was standing at the bar and Britney & Katie came up to me again. My first thought was, "this is going to cost me twice as much this time...". After the initial introduction and a couple drinks, Katie and I hit it off. We spent the rest of the night talking and sharing stories.
Katie and I are very thankful for Britney's persistence and not wanting to spend her own money on drinks...
I thought we were going for a long weekend to Chicago to visit family and friends and see a White Sox game—little did I know I was in for a trip full of surprises. We stayed downtown and had the perfect day on Friday exploring the city. We were scheduled to meet up with Bryan’s Dad, sister Katie and her husband Ryan for dinner that night. Bryan had made plans for the two of us to have drinks at the Signature Room atop the John Hancock building before dinner.
The closer we got to the Hancock, the quieter Bryan became. By the time we arrived at the Signature Lounge, I was talking to myself. The Lounge was packed and we got a table squeezed between two other couples. All of a sudden, Bryan stood up and ran off to the bathroom. When he returned, he asked if I wanted to see the city from the restaurant. We made our way through the crowd and down to a quiet restaurant table. By the time I turned around, he was down on one knee with a ring in his hand. I said “YES,” and then immediately, “Did you ask my Dad?” After a few excited phone calls to family and friends, we headed to the bar and had a celebratory drink. A horse drawn carriage picked us up outside the Hancock building for a stroll down Michigan Ave to Navy Pier. We met his Dad, Katie and Ryan and boarded the Odyssey for a cruise on Lake Michigan—and a wonderful end to an unforgettable night!
