David was living in Omaha in the fall of 2001 when he decided to head to Chicago to meet up with his old friends from Colorado, Andrew Spaulding and Jeff Boss. The occasion? Phil Lesh & Friends, a.k.a. "The Quintet," at the Aragon Ballroom.
David wheeled in to town the night before, went solo to North Mississippi Allstars at the Metro, then the next day met up with Drew and Boss at The Hopleaf on Clark Street in the Andersonville neighborhood before the Phil show.
In David walked and there Darby was. Darby hadn't seen Boss and Drew for many years until that night, but she knew the "Milts" in Breckenridge back in the day. When hugs were given and beers ordered, David told Darby he was from Omaha and she didn't flinch, or make a wise comment--always a good sign ;-)
Everyone had a good night and for the next 16 months, David and Darby communicated exclusively via email, before meeting up again.
After getting to know one another via the written word, David suggested Darby meet him in Austin during South By Southwest in March of 2003. Darby--who had friends in Austin, agreed to fly in--although she might have been a tad bit nervous about "a real date" with the Deeber.
David picked Darby up at her friends' house on Saturday night and one of the friends said, "So, you met on the Internet?" Uh, not exactly, but the couple did bond via email.
David whisked Darby into urban Austin and they dined at Carmelo's on E. 5th Street. David ordered chicken picatta and the couple shared spumoni for desert.
After dinner, D&D caught up with the characters from the hippie house--Daniel, Annie and others--at a comfortable neighborhood bar with Christmas lights, pool tables and a working train set.
When the couple later said goodnight and shared their first kiss, love was clearly in the air.
