The best way to get a sense of the history of Gettysburg is to take a tour. At the Gettysburg Tour Center, you can take a bus tour, or you can even have a tour guide drive you around the battlefield in your car. (That's the way all the locals tell you that you should do it.) There are also CD's and tapes available for you to guide yourself through historic Gettysburg.

Hershey, Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania is famous for, among other things, being home to Hershey's Chocolate. Hershey Park is an amusement park with something for everyone in the family. And chocolate. Check out this website to find out how to plan a visit to this famous, and very fun city. P.S. Hershey is about an hour away from Gettysburg.
Pennsylvania Dutch: Don't be fooled--they don't wear wooden shoes. And they're not really Dutch. But they make for good tourism.
Sarah's brother-in-law John knows Gettysburg like the back of his hand. Ask him for some of the high points. (He doesn't actually own a touring company. He just knows a lot of stuff about battlefields.)
