The Proposal!
I love the 4th of July. It’s always equaled SUMMER in my mind, and it’s always the day before my birthday! This year, Chris’ family (on his dad’s side) held a big family reunion at the family “farm“. I had met several family members prior to the reunion, but it would be the first time meeting some and seeing everyone all together. It promised to be an exciting day. I had no idea how exciting it would turn out to be!
The farm is near Watkins Glen and gorgeous Seneca Lake where Chris and I have spent several get-away weekends enjoying the cabin, the woods, and getting away from it all. It was a perfect summer day. On the drive down I had mentioned how I would love a delicious coffee drink before we went to the reunion. When he passed our usual turn-off to get to the farm he said he would first find me coffee. What a guy! We drove through Watkins Glen not seeing any place for coffee, and looked for a place to turn around. Or so I thought!
We drove down a little road bordering Seneca Lake. We had Casper, our Westie-Poo, along with us, and Chris suggested we stop to let Casper wander a bit. I walked a little with the doggie while Chris went to the trunk to get a soda from the cooler. He walked over to me with the soda, and I noticed him shove the can into his back pocket. Suddenly, somehow, a pretty little box was in his hands.
As I stood there stunned, Chris opened the box, popped the question, and dropped down on one knee. As I looked from the beautiful ring to his smiling face, all I could say was “Are you serious?” immediately followed by “YES!” The rest is a blur to me…lots of jumping up and down and teary eyes and hugs, I’m sure! It was a total, perfect surprise. We took this picture immediately after:

We met in 8th grade, which means the day after Labor Day marked 20 years for us! Lisa had a super-curly perm, Chris had a slap. We spent countless hours on the phone, passing notes in class, that sort of thing...very sweet. Two things stand out...going to see "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" at the movies and dancing to 'Under the Boardwalk' at an 8th grade dance. Ah, memories.
They messaged on Myspace from time to time...and again, and again, and again they messaged. Christian was in Olympia, Washington, and Lisa was still in upstate New York. Messages turned into phone calls, and letters, and finally, LOVE!
They put the plan in motion to get together and move Chris back to NY. On August 25th, 2006, Lisa flew to Seattle, where Chris was waiting. Together they drove back to Rochester across the country, and they've been together every day ever since. In fact, the night before the wedding will be the first night apart!
Thanks to the help of our wonderful families, it was a perfect day and exactly what we pictured. Our fairy tale is just beginning!
