For our guests coming into town for the wedding, San Francisco Bay Area has lots of cool sights and tourist attractions for all of you to see and experience. Here are some ideas.....
Crossing the strait of the Golden Gate from San Francisco to the Marin headlands for 1.7 miles is the world-renowned Golden Gate Bridge, easily identified by its International Orange color. Opened in 1937, the bridge was built at a cost of $33 million and 10 workers' lives. The single-suspension span is anchored off the shores of the bay by twin towers that reach skyward 750 feet, and was once taller than any building in San Francisco. To support the suspended roadway, two cables more than 7,000 feet in length, containing 70,000 miles of wire stretch over the top of the towers and are rooted in concrete piers on shore. Ten years in planning due to formidable opposition, but only four years in actual construction, the Golden Gate Bridge brought the communities of San Francisco and Marin counties closer together.
Alcatraz was the site of the first lighthouse in the Western United States but became a federal penitentiary from 1934-1963, housing famous convicts such as Al Capone and George "Machine Gun" Kelly. Now, this once infamous prison island is part of the Bay Area’s 75,000-acre Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
One of the most photographed locations in San Francisco, Alamo Square's famous "postcard row" at Hayes and Steiner Streets is indeed a visual treat. A tight, escalating formation of Victorian houses is back-dropped by downtown skyscrapers, providing a stunning contrast. The grassy square itself is an ideal midday break. One of 11 historic districts designated by the Department of City Planning, the area includes several bed and breakfast inns.
PIER 39, San Francisco's Premier Bay Attraction, is a festival marketplace featuring 110 specialty shops and 12 full-service Bay view restaurants serving fresh seafood, California cuisine, and casual fare.
PIER 39's location provides the picture perfect backdrop for postcard views of the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges, Alcatraz, Angel Island and the City skyline. PIER 39 is located two blocks east of Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco, at Beach Street and The Embarcadero, with convenient parking in the PIER 39 Garage directly across from the Entrance Plaza.
Our favorite passtime....Baseball!
Anyone who has seen the Giants play at ATT Park knows that Barry Bonds and other star players are not the only draw. Like a ship in harbor, the three-year-old park is nestled against the bay. Zen moments can be had and baseball forgotten when dizzy seat-searchers realize that yes, the water is right down there. A waterfront promenade allows spendthrift oglers to catch glimpses of the games through a fence. ATT Park, located in San Francisco's SoMa district, is easily accesible by public transportation.
