It was a really stormy night but a group of us wanted to go out to the Legion for a laugh. Wayne came in after walking over from the Scuba club and we always knew each other and had the same friends so we started talking. Towards the end of the night, he asked me to slow dance and during that dance, he gave me a quick peck on the lips. I was stunned and surprised because Wayne is such a shy and laid back person. Anyways, after the club, we all went to Harbour View and at the end of the night, although he lived in the opposite direction of me, he drove down in a cab with me to my house. On the way to my house, the cab got stuck in the snow, just before my house. While Wayne and the cab driver tried to push the car out, I put my number in Wayne's cell phone and walked home.
Over the next three days, I was calling my best friend Melissa to ask her about him. Little did I know that he was calling Melissa's roommate Krystle to ask about me.
Anyways, he finally called me from his cell phone and during the conversation we got cut off. I seen him on the parking lot and stopped to talk to him and tell him we were having a get together at my house.
The night of the get together, I remember him walking in and in front of everyone just kissed me. Again, complete shock. I remember asking him once we were together for a while why did he do that. His answer "Because there was just something about you. I knew you were the one." When he said that, my heart skipped a beat. That's one of the reasons I love him so much!
After we dated for a couple months, I had to go back to St. John's for school. I didn't want to do long distance anymore so I told him that we were better off friends. We still talked online and that but something was missing.
His birthday came around and I called him but got no answer. No more than one minute later was he calling me back. For the rest of the summer, we talked every night and built a great friendship. He became my best friend.
Luckily, I was able to go back to Port aux Basques for another work term and I remember thinking I'll be able to be close to him. He was the first person I went to see when I got back. The way he looked at me, I knew I was in love with him.
We've been together ever since. Wayne and me been through distance, the loss of family members, moving in together, and moving to a new place. Throughout everything, we have been each others support system, a shoulder to cry on, a friend to laugh with, and a soulmate.
Six months into our relationship, the distance was starting to get to us. We knew we needed to find a way to be together if we wanted to be in this for the long haul.
Little did I know not only was he applying to school in St. John's to be with me, but he also had a little surprise up his sleeve.
One night after I was having a tough time being away from him, I went to bed early and was really upset. At 1 o'clock in the morning, my roommate Ashley came knocking on my door to get me to come and see something. Being in the mood I was in, I said open the door and show me whatever it is you have to show me. She said Ok!
Next thing I know, she opens the door and here is Wayne stood up in the doorway with a piece of luggage in each one of his hands. I'm sure the look on my face was priceless. The funniest thing was the first thing I said to him was "You son of a B****" because I never thought in any capacity would he be able to surprise me like that. What I didn't know was that the surprise wasn't over.
The next night, I had a night class and he stayed at the apartment, or at least so I thought. When I got home, my bedroom door was closed. I knocked on the door and he opened it up and he had a few candles laid out on my desk (he never got to lit them b/c I came home too early) a teddy bear and a Cedar Scents box. Anyone who knows me knows how much I love Cedar Scents boxes.
I opened the box and here with this adorable ring. He said "Crystal, I love you so much. I want to make a promise to you that I want to make this work. I want to be with you."
I had always wished to be promised like my parents were and now I was. I cried so hard and I called Mom and she started crying too.
Wayne had taken that step to show me he was there for me and for the long haul. He'll never know how much that meant to me.
Wayne and me had talked about marriage for a while actually before we got engaged. It just always seemed like talk and that it wasn't going to happen for a while.
We were at my grandparents house for Thanksgiving supper, which is next door to my house. After supper, we left to go back out to my house and all of a sudden he said "Come here for a minute."
We walked onto my parent's yard in front of their fireplace that they use in the summer. Next thing I knew, he was down on one knee with a white box in his hand.
He said, "Crystal, I love you so much. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?"
I started crying and he started crying and of course, I said YES! It was so simple but yet perfect.
I ran upstairs to tell Mom and Dad but they were already crying. They had known all along. Wayne even asked my Dad's permission which meant so much.
We had a little party that night with both our families and friends. It was just a perfect day and the beginning of the next chapter of our lives together.
