Travel Tips for Grand Cayman
- All travelers must have a valid US Passport to travel to the Caribbean. Obtaining a passport is not difficult but it can take up to 4 months to receive, so plan ahead.
- Few places fly directly to Grand Cayman. Most carriers will either connect through Charlotte, NC or Miami, FL.
- Flight time to Grand Cayman from Charlotte is about 3 to 3.5 hours.
- Flight time to Grand Cayman from Miami is about 1.5 hours.
- Cayman Airways is no longer flying out of Dulles.
- Please remember the 3-1-1 rule for carry-on liquids and gels. For more information, please see: http://www.tsa.gov
It is highly recommended that everyone rent a car while in Cayman. It is difficult to get around without a car. There is bus service on the island, but it's spotty at best.
If staying at Turtle Nest Inn, car rental is included in your price.
- Car rental companies are located at the airport. Walk out the airport doors and go to your left and cross the street.
- Remember to drive on the left!
- Speed limits are posted in MPH...however your car's speedometer might be in kilometers per hour.
- DO NOT SPEED. It's very easy to tell a rental from Island cars as they have a different color license plate...cops *will* ticket you.
- The average speed limit around the Island is about 30 to 40 MPH.
- Cayman uses lots of round abouts (traffic circles) instead of lights. We love traffic circles since they keep traffic moving. Just yield, stay in your lane, and RELAX!
- The Island is only 22 miles long...it is impossible to get lost. But if you do get turned around, feel free to ask for directions. The locals are generally very nice!
