I had just moved to New York City to go to school at Polytechnic University. I had decided that I wanted to meet new people so I decided to go to the New Student Overnighter. There James was the couselor and I was the camper. When I first saw James, I thought that he was a pretty cute Japanese guy. He thought that i was a snooty Chinese girl just like the girls i was hanging out with. Later that weekend, we were making team banners and James comes around and says, "What's a Ferdie? Is that like a Furby?" (This is the time that Furbys were getting popular.) I say, "That's my name." Then he turns around and before he had a chance to walk away, I say, "that's really not fair that I know your name and you don't know mines." So geekily, we exchanged emails and a couple of days later, James sends me every single way to contact him: pager, cell, dorm, queen's house, email, aim, everything. I called him a couple days after that 'cause I didn't want to seem that I sweated him...teehee...One week after we met, we went on our first date: San Gennaro Festival, Ngo Nya Restaurant and Winter Garden. We have been together since and my mom is still convinced that James is Japanese.
Early October, James sent me an email that said that he had won the 2nd place prize in a charity raffle: a balloon ride. (I found out later that this email was doctored to work with his proposal.) Late December, the weather was perfect for flying: minimal winds and gentle sun. Up in the air, I saw people running from tree to tree. James points out an airport down the ways and I’m thinking, 'Airport? We're in Cheshire?' Then he directs me to look down and to tell him what the sign says. Instead of “Ferdie, will you marry me?,” it said, "Ferdie, don't do it!" Totally surprised, James says, "We have been together for 6 years and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?" Teary-eyed and puffy-fingered, I said yes. We touch down on a frozen pond in Hubbard Park and our friends were waiting to greet us. Our friends had followed us up from NYC to Connecticut the night before, without me knowing, just to be there. His proposal was very sweet and his friends’ scheming made it even more memorable!
