This article from the Times describes an issue that we have faced in our relationship. As a "domestic partner," Jamie was able to enroll in Josh's federal health care program through the Department of Education. However, unlike traditionally married couples, we are taxed for those benefits. It works like this: The health care provider figures out an estimated cost of Jamie's annual benefits through Josh's program -- they use the COBRA system -- and this amount is added to Josh's W-2 as "taxable income." Married couples do not have to face this kind of tax inequity, but we have been dealing with it for the last two fiscal years.
The federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) defines marriage as between one man and one woman. So, when Jamie and I get legally married in the state of Connecticut in a couple weeks, we still will not be able to apply as married spouses for equal health benefits. Or, if we do, our case might end up in court.
According to the article, Obama is in a tough political situation regarding this issue. We hope he will stay true to his campaign promises and fight on behalf of equal rights.

This is one issue that is completely insane! Every politician dances around this topic whether it is an election year or not. If I am Gay, Married or Crooked, I just want my partner to be included on my health insurance, life insurance (benefactor)and home/condo/apartment that we share. Also, to be taken care of in our old age! Sexual orientation should not be a factor! Period!
Yes, the law states that marriage consists of "a man and a woman." But, God doesn't make junk! He makes everyone in His image! Where is that in our law books?
