Love At First Ding

Or, How We Met
Love At First Ding

We certainly weren't looking for each other! Josh and I met in an online video game in June, 2004. Because my character was only level 12, he assumed I was new to the game. Really, I just got tired of my dark elf character and decided to play a human.

Josh was a knight in shining armor. I remember my first thought was "Wow, that elf is rocking that pink armor!" He still insists it was "light red," not pink. But between you and me, it was definitely pink!

We were sitting in a town at an event, and I decided I was bored. When I started to leave, he got up and chased me down to give my character a wooden dove. I thought it was a really sweet thing to do (since he thought I was new to the game), so the next day I wrote him a thank-you letter on a forum we both visited. I wanted to make sure I saw that elf again!

Before I knew it, Josh's character was popping up everywhere I was doing quests. If I needed to kill a giant spider, he was suddenly right there. If I needed to take an item from Gludin to Gludio, he ran with me. I had my own personal escort, and he took me to see beautiful environments that I was too low-level to see on my own. We got chased down by the Godzilla-sized Orphen (queen of spiders), we sneaked past giant lizard-men to get to Angel Falls (the biggest waterfall in the game with a fantastic view), and --best of all!-- Josh took me to see the Enchanted Valley. That was the only place in the game where you could find trees in every color of the rainbow, pixies flying around, and even UNICORNS (which were aggressive and would try to kill you)!

That is how our relationship began. We weren't looking for each other, and even after we found each other it was all about playing the game. Within a few months, though, we started talking more. As we talked, we realized that we had a lot more in common than just making a good team for slaying dragons. We make a good team in everything.

A Long Time Coming!

Or, The Proposal
A Long Time Coming!

Josh proposed on August 16, 2009. The day before, which was Saturday, he expected me to be volunteering. That was his master plan... to wait until I left for the afternoon, then run out to buy the ring and I'd never even know he was gone.

Well, I'm just not that simple.

Volunteering was canceled that day, so I decided I should carpool with Josh because I needed to go to PetSmart for about half an hour. He was going to meet his parents, so I thought he could drop me off, eat lunch, come get me, and we'd go grocery shopping together.

I could not understand why he insisted that I take my own car and he should go grocery shopping on his own.

It ended up being a very complicated discussion, and finally he broke down and said "OKAY I AM NOT GOING GROCERY SHOPPING, GET IT?!"

So, then I felt pretty bad. "Oh, you're going birthday present shopping, huh? I'm sorry... I didn't think you were getting me anything else since we're going to New Orleans."

Josh said "Yes. I am going birthday present shopping. So, you have to take your own car."

So, I did. And he took his. I was gone for about 45 minutes, and he was gone for 10 HOURS. I was soooo bored. He said he'd be home around 2pm, then he called after 2 and said he'd be home at 4pm... then he didn't get home until 8pm!

By that time, I was frustrated and bored and just wanted to go to bed. So, we pretty much did that.

That night, Josh was tossing and turning and just would not go to sleep. It was really annoying. He was fidgety about something. Finally, he said "I think I'll give you one of your birthday presents tomorrow."

Well, I told him I could wait because my birthday was still a week away, but he insisted. So, I said that was fine. Whatever he wanted to do.

Sometime during the night, he got a phone call from work and had to get up to take care of whatever was going on. I just went back to sleep and didn't think much of it.

I woke up early because we were going shopping for a baby shower gift for our friends. I showered, got dressed, did my makeup, and then came downstairs. Josh was also up and dressed (amazing), and as soon as I got to the living room he told me to close my eyes. So, I did.

He ran all around the apartment making noises. He rustled papers, opened and shut doors, even flushed a toilet. He came back and put a folded-up piece of paper in my hands. Then I could open my eyes.

I opened the paper (which was scrap paper from his job), and it was a letter about the past 5 years (which he wrote in the middle of the night). Times we'd been far apart, and times we took each other for granted. It was just about love. How we'd stuck it out, everything was great now, and there was just one more thing to do.

I was reading that all out loud, and it was a long letter. As I got to the end, I realized what was really going on. Until then I didn't think it was very likely that he'd propose, but I read the last line, "So, there's just one question left to ask..." and Josh got down on his knee.

"So... you're gonna marry me.... right?" he asked.

Of course, I laughed, and said "Yeah!"

So, we're finally getting married.
