AHR Decor (more DIY) & Cake Inspirations

Here are some ideas that we love, inspirations that we can feed from, & the DIY projects that we're attempting.

Now added pictures of OUR actual AHR items

Our centerpieces

Our centerpieces

These are just what I wanted! Of course the pictures do not do them justice! The tables were beautiful! And we only have a few centerpieces left as everyone wanted one!

My candles are sand-covered 8" pillar candles with shells and crystals...and lots more shells & candles!

The branches in the vase have many shells attached to them...these are really cool in "real life".

This is our mock-up for our "just in case we might need extras" centerpieces. And good thing we had them because we did place one on the groom's family table and placed the others in the restrooms.

Table Name Holders

Table Name Holders

Ended up using these for my "RESERVED" signs for family tables and for "Are you snapping pictures?" signs for the photoshare cards.

Finally, *FINALLY* found just the right idea for our table name holders! This picture is our mock-up...we'll probably use an orange tropical flower in each, but this gives an idea of what they'll look like.

The ceramic shells were found at the Dollar Tree, just insert a little floral foam (to keep the card holder in place ~ found at Flower Factory), top with Spanish Moss, and a tropical flower. And for a little over $1 each, we have our table name holders!

***I will post new pictures because I have now sprayed the ceramic shells with "Make it Pearl" Krylon paint...and they look amazing! It was just the extra touch that they needed!!! I also found the flowers too.

Table Name Mock-up

Table Name Mock-up

Here is a picture of our 1st mock-up of our table names for the AHR. We chose places in/ around Negril & Ocho Rios Jamaica (Royal Palm Reserve, YS Falls, Mayfield Falls, Chukka Cove, Dolphin Cove - to name a few).

Same sunset picture was used, printed "RESERVED" on vellum and attached picture and vellum to the cardstock with gold photo corners...they look pretty.

We are using the sunset photo taken by my uncles on their trip to Negril in May 2008 (it is also the picture being used for our AHR invitations).

* The sunset photo is formatted to 4.5" x 4.5"
* Final product will have the name printed on vellum (left over from invites) - exact measurements of the sunset photo - attached with photo corners
* The chocolate matting measures 5" x 5" (and is exactly the measurements left over from our AHR invitations)

Signs

Signs

The "Reserved" & "Are you snapping photos" verbiage was printed on vellum, cut to the same size as the sunset photo, and attached to the cardstock using gold photo corners.

This project was simple and looks so professional!

Guest Book ~ Wedding Wishes ~ Mock-up picture

Guest Book ~ Wedding Wishes ~ Mock-up picture

Inspired by Martha Stewart Weddings, this was our "guest book"!

Instead of just signing their names into a book, our guests wrote "wedding wishes to the new Mr. & Mrs.".

Our wishes are now placed in a book that we can enjoy always!

This is my mock-up pic

Wishes Signage

Wishes Signage

I wanted to keep the instruction for the Guest Book/ Wish Book short and sweet. This is what I came up with (a mix of a few ideas that I found online):

Weddings are much more than
just flowers & tossed rice...

So please take a moment to
give us advice!

Just be sure to sign your name

So we'll forever remember that
you came!

Thank you for your wishes!
Much love,
The New Mr. & Mrs."

What I would do differently: Should have made the sign much bigger (8x10 at least) and mounted it on foam board. My sign was too small (5x7) for people to pay any attention to and I had questions about the guest book all night.

AHR Card Chest

AHR Card Chest

We bought this chest to use as our card box. FI stained it & cut out one of the slats at the top of the chest so we can "lock" it.

We're going to drape fishnet and shells over the chest.

The "One Love" & "One Heart" were added bonuses that FI made because he thinks they're "hot". The small chest is for our rings (I stained that one all by myself!).

Everyone loved this! We wired the top shut...just in case of pirates!

Reception Sign

Reception signage to direct guests to the Banquet Hall for our AHR.

Small yard sign free from Vista Print, paid shipping only. Reverse side has directional signage as well.

Jamaican Smile ~ Our Signature Drink!

Jamaican Smile ~ Our Signature Drink!

I created our sign for our signature drink before we knew what was going to be in it! So the description simply reads, "It's fruity, it's rummy, & it's yummy, Mon!"

Our bartender created the concoction for us the night that we set up the hall. We had to use what their bar had stocked so we had come up with our own yummy version of a Jamaican Smile. And it was indeed yummy and RUMMY (and taste-testing made setting-up very fun)! And it was a big hit with our guests!

Fortune Toss Bouquet

Fortune Toss Bouquet

I loved the idea of a "Fortune" Toss Bouquet (idea came from Martha Stewart Weddings).

I made 6 small individual bouquets with little "fortunes" attached to each one. Then they were all tied together to appear as 1 bouquet. Before I tossed it, I untied the knot so they'd separate and 6 guests received a mini-bouquet and a fortune.

This is one of six (all had different fortunes)...(didn't get a pic of it all together ~ DOH!).

The Fortunes for the Toss Bouquet

The Fortunes for the Toss Bouquet

The fortunes for the bouquets were printed on cardstock and simply attached to a stem in the bouquet.

Fortunes that I created were:
"You'll marry your prince charming."
"Dreams really do come true, thank you for being apart of mine."
"Tell him if he likes it, he should put a ring on it."
"You will meet your true love when you least expect it."
"You will marry your true love."
And since we had an all-adult reception
"Who needs a man when you've got a vibrator?"
(My brother's girlfriend got caught this one...we just giggled and giggled! She loved it!)

Light Columns

Light Columns

Love this idea from Martha Stewart Weddings! It should be simple to create...and Shane will *LOVE* that he "gets" this project! I think that they will be placed along the walls of the dance floor.

*FOUND THE RICE PAPER LANTERNS AT A FLEA MARKET THIS WEEKEND FOR $3 EACH!!!* *SWEEEEET!*

These will be created by stringing white "fairy" lights on a dowel rod positioned within a sturdy base and stacking paper lanterns over the rod and lights...sounds simple enough...we'll see!!!

Dance floor

Dance floor

The dance floor will be highlighted with paper lanterns.

We have 20 - 8" lanterns in solid red, purple, green, & yellow (found at the Dollar Tree and use 3-AAA batteries). We did not use the little $1 Store lanterns...we found that they simply do not stay lit and some wouldn't light at all. If you use them, I would suggest lighting them w/ LEDs.

We also have 12" white paper lanterns (these were found at a local flea market and do not have lights).

Lighting the Lanterns Inexpensively

Lighting the Lanterns Inexpensively

These *ROCK*! They're super bright and last for days...literally!!!!!

We couldn't afford those fancy-schmancy lantern lights, so we've found instructions for making our own (see link above).

This idea would have NEVER occurred to me without finding Knottie bnlchic03's bio...she also lists the instructions WONDERFULLY in the DIY part of her bio!!! But it's soooo easy...

* The LEDs have 2 wires attached to them, place 1 wire on each side of the battery, and tape!
Really, it's that easy!!!

Use 3 LED lights per lantern.

Ebay sellers in the US that I bought from (fast shipping too!):
Ebay store: Golden Depot ~ 100 CR2032 Lithium batteries ~ $6.50 + $9.90 (shipping) = $16.40
Ebay store: cece718 ~ 100 White *Diffused* 10mm LED lights ~ $22.97 + $2.50 (shipping) = $25.47

And these are super-bright! We're also placing these inside centerpieces for extra flair!

FYI~ Glowsticks do NOT work. I tried sticks and necklaces...nope, nope, nope.

To be hung from the arch over our AHR cake

To be hung from the arch over our AHR cake

This inspiration is from the Sandals Resorts, Preston Bailey "Crystal Collection".

I am experiementing with drilling small holes into 2" seashells and am painting them with a pearlescent coat. So far, they look great! I am not even sure if I'll even bother to get the crystals or not.

*Update 4/4/09*
This is on hold...the painted shells don't appeal to me anymore and the orchids are expensive (need 4 orchid heads per strand). Hmmmm...maybe I'll modify or maybe I'll ditch the idea...

But I did find bulk crystals in all shapes and sizes on the internet with very good prices...but if I don't need them, we might as well save our money.

~The Cake * Chunky Chocolate

It's not this one...though we really like it
~ I love the whipped/ chunky look to the frosting on this cake! I think that I will prefer to have seashell chocolates vs. flowers though...

And, it's not this one...though we love it
Finding affordable chocolate shells that I like is HARD to do!

I do want this cake topper though...not easy to find either! I'm sure these are chocolate...

~ The cake that inspired ours... ~

~ The cake that inspired ours... ~

~ The piping is called Cornelli Lace
~ Our cake will be 3 tiers as pictured
~ But we are using real seashells (processed and CLEAN seashells!!!)

We have chosen to cut a traditional Jamaican rum cake after the ceremony in Negril. So we've got to have a chocolate cake at home!

And, a traditional white wedding cake just isn't really "us", and Shane loves chocolate, so 2 tiers will be chocolate & the middle tier will be vanilla...with chocolate icing, of course!

Our cake!

Our cake!

We still get compliments on this cake! Not only did it look perfect, it tasted wonderful!!! YUMMY!

We couldn't afford chocolates, so we used beautiful shells that I hand-picked for the cake.

What I hated...who in the heck put the freakin'-frackin' styrofoam plates on our beautiful cake table??? I meant to take them off all night and forgot! Now every single picture has these butt-ugly plates in them! Grrrrr...(really it's made me so upset that I've woke up in the middle of the night pissed off about it).

I love our cake table...well, except for those stupid freakin' forks and plates...why, why, why didn't I take a second and remove them...???
