Doug and I met in June of 2001, the summer going into my Junior year of high school, his Senior year. I just starting working at CVS/Pharmacy and he was my supervisor. We really hit it off at work and about a month later we hung out for the first time. Soon, my friends were his friends and his friends were by friends...by September 6, 2001 we were offically together. We will be celebrating our 8 year anniversary on our wedding day!
My freshman year of college money was tight for both Doug and I. So, we decided to give each other small Christmas and birthday gift (both in January). He promised he would make up the small gifts by "wowing me" on Valentines Day. He was telling me this since we decided to have low budget holidays in November. So, Valentine's Day comes and he surprises me with two tickets to go on the Spirit of Boston...and also said there was more. The suspense was killing me since I had been waiting to be "wowed" since November I was so excited a night of candle light, dinner and dancing. As I was getting ready...I was shaving my arm pits (yes, disturbing I know) in the bathroom and he walks over and says "I didn't know when to give you this...so, here you go. Will you marry me?" I was at a loss for words. I opened up the box and I believe at some point I mutter "yes" before he began to explain that he had a big proposal planned out but he had no idea how much engagement rings cost so he bought me a promise ring..."promising that a better ring and proposal was coming." It was sweet...and memorable. He made me wait for the surprise for months...just to ask me while I was shaving!!
Doug and I had tickets to go the Celtics Home Opener and ring ceremony on October 28,2008. As I was getting ready I sat on the bed to put my shoes on and Doug bent over in a weird way) (for those of you that know yoga, it looked like he was doing a down dog. I asked him what he was doing and he said "I dropped a quarter." So...I continued to put my shoes on and he said "Oh, you dropped something." I was looking down tying my shoes so I replied "No I didn't." and he insisted I look up to see what I dropped. When I finally looked up he was holding my ring!! :-) Apparently, he did physically drop the quarter for an excuse to get down on his knee, but the quarter didn't bounce the way he planned...hence the weird bend..haha
So, he gives me the ring...I took it from him and we did the giddy hug and kisses....and then I said "Well?" He said "Well, what?" and I said "Don't you have something to ask me?" So, he did....and me, being me I said "No." :-) (NOTE: We had already started booking vendors before the ring came along so it was obvious to him that it was a joke).
He also told me, see I told you...once I get my ring (AKA The Celtics recieve their Championship ring), you'll get yours." Hehad the ring for over 3 months but was waiting for Opening Night to give it to me.
He later told me he planned to propose at the game...but he was nervous about getting the ring past security without me finding out (needing to empty pockets, etc). And that when he went to ask my father's permission (Yes, he asked my dad!!) my father told him that I would have loved for him to incorporate my grandparents somehow (i.e. their anniversary is on Halloween). So, Doug explained to him that he really wanted to do it at the game and he'd been planning that since the Celtics won the championship last year....so, instead of trying to get past security, he proposed at our house, which was once my grandparents as a way to incorporate them.
