Julia & Thomas

Our Story

Open to Possibilities

It wasn't so long ago that neither Thomas nor Julia could imagine finding the person they would want to spend the rest of their lives with. It seemed a ridiculous impossibility considering that both of them were ambitious, creative, people with full, busy lives already.

They were both open possibilities though...

The First Meeting

One afternoon late in May, on a day with the kind of gorgeously perfect weather that only Southern California ever has, Thomas and Julia met purely by chance in the picturesque town of Solvang. They spent several hours walking through the town in the warm sun, sharing tales about life and family and their dreams for the future, and each of them left knowing that this was going to really be something special.

(Author's note: In the spirit of honesty, I have to admit that it was actually quite chilly that day, the winds howled at us throughout our walk, and we had actually met online a few days prior to meeting in person... but other than those minor details, the above paragraph is 100% true, and I think my version makes a better story!)

The Summer Months

Things moved quickly from there.

Sure, it may be true that every relationship progresses at its own speed, and what may seem like a slow and leisurely pace for one couple may seem like break-neck speed to another; but even with that in mind, it's safe to say that things moved quickly for Thomas and Julia.

Within days of their first meeting, they were spending most of their time together, and introductions to each others' families were happening within just a few weeks. The summer months flew by, and very quickly it seemed as if they had just always been together. Soon they realized, to their own surprise, that they had just naturally fallen into planning for a life together.

All of this was happening despite the fact that they lived more than a hundred miles apart.

And then there was New York...

They had flown to the Big Apple to attend a photography convention, Julia as a photographer, and Thomas as a publisher. New York saw snow in October, for the first time ever, the day after they arrived. While there, they planned to see the sights of the city, meet up with some of Julia's friends, and overall just get away from the grind of their daily routine. It was a vacation after all.

All the while, Thomas secretly carried a ring in his pocket and waited for the perfect moment to arrive. When it didn't arrive on its own, he quietly conspired with her friends to make it happen anyway. So with a stunning view of the city, a stiff drink and an awkward joke to break the tension, and then a bent knee and a proffered ring, Thomas asked a question and held his breath.

That Julia had already figured out what he was planning to ask came as no surprise.

Nor, thankfully, was her answer!
