Playa del Carmen- Things to do!

Overview

Overview

Playa, as locals call it, is located on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, about 40 miles south of Cancun. Discovered by those craving white beaches, gentle surf and outdoors activities, this once sleepy fishing village has retained its small-town charm. Buildings are low-rise, and the atmosphere is still authentic. When the sun goes down, the temperature goes up. Bars get into full swing around midnight, and Avenida Quinta transforms from a family-friendly pedestrian way to a sizzling hot spot.

Chichen Itza

This is the most famous site of the Maya, one of the world's oldest and most mysterious cultures. The city was founded in 445 AD and inhabited until 1204 AD, when it was inexplicably abandoned. The most important structure is the Castle, with stairs crowned by serpent heads. Other structures include the Temple of the Warriors, the Observatory, the Temple of the Thousand Columns, and the Temple of the Jaguars. While ruins are the primary reason to visit Chichen Itza, there is a wealth of other attractions as well. Otherworldly bird-watching and stargazing experiences can be found within the Maya Jungle Reserve and in Hacienda Chichen's Bird Refuge. Yaxkin Spa makes the most of this sacred space with holistic Mayan healing. Freshwater sinkholes offer unforgettable swimming. There are many tours of Chichen Itza which can be booked at the Royal. If you want to visit ruins, these are much closer than Tulum.

Diving/Snorkeling - Mexico Blue Dream

Scuba diving in Playa del Carmen is an experience like no other. Submerge yourself in the lively worlds of coral reefs off the shores of Playa del Carmen or Cozumel. For more experienced divers, plunge into mysterious and unique cenotes, eyes to a vast and silent world of extravagant rock formations, and experience cavern and cave diving in the world’s largest underground river systems. Playa del Carmen is, doubtlessly, the best starting point for the perfect diving vacation. **This company is rated #1 by Trip Advisor.

Discovery Jungle Park- Zip Line & ATV

This activity is raked #4 in popularity by Trip Advisor. If your looking for an afternoon of adventure, then a trip to Discovery Jungle Park may just be the thing for you. Check out the website.

Xcaret EcoPark

Xcaret (pronounced eesh - carette ) " Mexico ’s sacred paradise" is one of the area's most lovely and unique attractions. A singularly unique ecological park, Xcaret was built over the ancient Mayan jungle seaport of Polé. Its privileged location amidan archaeological site and the natural splendor of the peninsula inspired the fusion of nature, culture, history, and technology in perfect harmony. Dive the underground rivers that join the most extensive subterranean water system in the world, snorkel the crystal waters bursting with colorful life, swim with dolphins, and float down the Maya River to an authentic recreation of a Mayan village. At night, ancient Mayan rituals are re-enacted in illuminated grottoes and culminate in a traditional show in the moonlit amphitheater. We have heard great things about Xcaret. It is a top ranking activity on Trip Advisor. We may do this while we are on our honeymoon!

Massage at Veronica's

5 th avenue and Constituyentes Playa del Carmen 77710

984 1121360

If you can't imagine a vacation without a massage, then you might want to check out Veronica's. While the Royal has an amazing spa, we have heard Veronica's gives a great massage for a great price! It is just down the street from the hotel.

Shopping on 5th Ave. - Avenida 5

Just out the front door of the Royal

One of the great things about the Royal is that it is located on 5th Avenue, which is where all the action happens in PDC. While the back of the Royal has one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mayan Rivera, the front of the Royal leads to a busy street lined with all kinds of shops, art and crafts galleries, cafes, restaurants and bars. We have been told this is a place not to miss. Granted some of it is touristy, but I know we will be checking it out. We have heard that you should walk a couple of blocks past the hotel and the shopping gets better! Bring your dollars and pesos and get ready to do some bargining.
