David McDonald and Kimberly Gibson

Our Story

David is an English Teacher and Kimberly is an Art Teacher. What this tells you is that these stories will be long winded with a creative flare.

Hold on, it's going to be a long ride.

About David

About David

David is an English teacher and Swim Coach at Amherst County High School. He went to Hampden-Sydney College for his undergrad and Sweet Briar College for his Masters in Teaching.

In David's spare time he enjoys reading the rich content in novels such as Harry Potter or Twilight, and harassing small animals with his paintball gun from our up-stairs bathroom windows.

Although David's career is currently in Education he would like to begin moonlighting as a crafty detective going by the name "Mac." His aspirations to be a detective bloomed with the untimely disappearance of his hedgehog folder.

Ok but really, David is the most fantastic man I have met. He is honest, caring, and makes me laugh on a daily basis. I see so much of who I aspire to be in him and I could not have a better person to spend the rest of my life with than him.

About Kimberly

About Kimberly

Kimberly is an Art Teacher at E.C. Glass High School and in her "spare time" works at Rise Up Climbing, the indoor rock climbing gym in Lynchburg. Between teaching and climbing, Kimberly is an inspiration for various movie characters like Violet from "The Incredibles" and that chick from "The Grudge."

When she is not being a rock marmot or scaring movie goers, Kimberly likes to dress our dog, Scout, in demeaning costumes. Kimberly says that Scout likes it, but I can see the pain in her doggy-eyes.

An avid hater of pies and assorted anything made with hot-fruit, Kimberly also despises meat and will come at you like a spider monkey if she sees you noshing on a drum-stick.

Though militant vegetarianism and hating on pie nearly fills her schedule, Kimberly still finds time to run, swim, and get slow-hit by cars on her bike.

While Kimberly is an extroverted person with many different interests, she does find time for serious introspection. Currently she is seeking help for a profound and consuming addiction to Facebook. If you see her on this life-absorbing program, please chastise her soundly.

In all serious, though, Kimberly QK is a beautiful person with an engaging and feisty personality. Kimberly is passionate about art, and I am always looking forward to her latest creation. Kimberly is a kind and giving woman, teacher, and artist.

How We Met

A convoluted story of attraction - Oct. 2004
How We Met

David and Kimberly first met at Sweet Briar College on freshman orientation day, 2004.

Kimberly and David were both orientation leaders for the Sweet Briar girls and Hamden-Sydney boys and spent the day before the orientation learning icebreakers and cheesy games to play with the freshman. During one of these games, a name game in which you used an adjective with the same letter in your first name, David was already in the large circle of HSC and SBC leaders when Kimberly came in late with slim to no regard of her tardiness. As the adjectives were slung around the circle, it came time for David’s turn: he said, "I am demonstrative Dave." When it came to be Kimberly's turn she came up with "I am cool Kimberly... with a 'k.'" As that brilliance spewed from Kimberly's mouth David was hooked and apparently (since Kimberly doesn't remember this) made sure he ate lunch at Kimberly's table.

The next day was freshman orientation, and as the events went on David and Kimberly did not see each other the entire day until the afternoon in which Kimberly had to tell a story to all of the HSC and SBC leaders and freshman. Kimberly's verbal brilliance continued its journey from her mouth to David's ears when she told a story about peeing in a wide mouth bottle in a SBC van after a field hockey game. As other wretched and vowed to never forget that story, a halo appeared above Kimberly's head in David's eyes. He was hooked.

Later that night there was a large social between HSC and SBC in which "Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts" set the mood for all relationships to bloom. David and Kimberly had some overlapping friends and ended up socializing before the party in the same dorm room. This is when Kimberly really noticed David and made sure she made him jealous by talking loudly about how cute some other VMI boy was. Boy, did it work. David and Kimberly ended up dancing all night long, but to get Kimberly back David asked for Kimberly's friend’s number and not hers. The nerve David had.

Kimberly and David did not come in contact again until a few weeks later in which David joined a climbing and rafting trip to West Virginia that Kimberly was leading. Kimberly was pleasantly surprised to see David when the HSC boys showed up at SBC for the trip. That trip proved to be the opportunity for Kimberly and David to finally exchange contact information and begin their relationship.

The Proposal

The Proposal

It had been over a year since David and Kimberly began dating (again) and David planned out the whole weekend. All Kimberly had was a packing list that David made for her which was misleading. While Kimberly was giving the SATs that Saturday Morning David had time to pack himself and the car leaving Kimberly still clueless by the afternoon.

By about 3pm David and Kimberly reached our location, The White Pig. The White pig is a vegan bed and breakfast (since Kimberly doesn’t eat meat) that doubles as a pot bellied pig sanctuary. When they pulled in thought the gates David filled Kimberly in on the bed and breakfast and when they unpacked the car they immediately wanted to know where the pigs were. But it is now obvious that the ring was burning a hole in David’s pocket so they explored some trails on the property; David searching for places to propose.

The house David and Kimberly were staying at was a short distance from the innkeeper’s house and that is where the pigs were. So they ventured over there, met some pigs (not as cute as babe), and other assorted animals (dogs, barnyard cats, a mountain pony). David already had dinner planned so they went back to the B&B, sat on the porch, and had some wine before heading out to Mas in Charlottesville. During this time David was acting rather strange; giggling every now and again, following the childish noises with an "I love you." At one point he had moved the table from in front of them but then did nothing. In the back of Kimberly’s mind she kept on thinking "is he going to do it?" But she would brush off the thought, trying to enjoy the weekend for what it was not for what it could be. Finally David asked.

As they sat there with the sun going down, drinking wine, David asked "will you marry me?" Kimberly’s dimwitted reaction, "NOW?!?" Eventually she said yes and his response, "Well, don't you want to see the ring first?" And he got down on his knee and pulled the beautiful ring out from his pocket.

The rest of the weekend was spent enjoying the stars out in the country, enjoying the beautiful weather on the trails in Nelson, and visiting a vegan winery, and another winery on the way home.
