Cabo San Lucas is known around the world for its spectacular sport fishing. The combination of the warmer waters of Mexico's Sea of Cortez and the colder waters of the Pacific Ocean bring together a wide variety of fish from marlin to dorado and tuna.
Cooling off on the main beach in Cabo San Lucas is a people-watchers' dream. El Médano beach, a short walk from downtown, is also a mecca for watersports. With calm waters most of the time, the goings-on in the bay are a spectator sport alone. Various watercraft cruise the beach, vying for position with the crowd. Water-skiers bob and twist, Yamaha Waverunners churn more waves, and parasailers look down from brightly colored rigs. In the distance, graceful kayaks glide towards Land's End as paddles dip and gleam in the golden sun. Glass bottom boats ply the curious out to the arch, the culmination of Baja California's nearly 1,000-mile long peninsula. Watching from the Médano Beach sand across the Cabo San Lucas harbor, the scene takes on a vaguely surrealistic character. Occasionally, the odd skydiver or two lands to loud cheers. In Cabo San Lucas, the only limit is your budget and energy level.
Cabo San Lucas and the Los Cabos area, in the span of a few short years, has become one of North America’s hottest golf destinations—and it’s no wonder. The Tom Weiskopf designed eighteen-hole Desert Course at Cabo del Sol, marks the sixth championship golf course to open here in the Cabo San Lucas area. From humble beginnings at the nine hole Campo de Golf in San Jose del Cabo, in the last decade golf has grown to become the number two attraction in Los Cabos.
The municipality of Los Cabos, an area comprising roughly half of the Baja California Sur peninsula below the capital city of La Paz, includes Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo, The Tourist Corridor and Todos Santos. In 1990, it was Don Koll, a dedicated golfer and successful California developer who commissioned Hall of Fame great, Jack Nicklaus, to design twenty-seven holes of golf at the Palmilla (now One&Only Palmilla) resort.
