Meg & Spyro

Our Story

From our first encounter to the engagement...

Thank you to long lines and slow cashiers

Thank you to long lines and slow cashiers

Spyro and Meg met in line at the University of Connecticut book store. It was the first week of school (2006) when everyone floods the Co-op to purchase books and the future couple ended up next to each other in the long line to the register. They struck up a conversation about being tall, transferring to UConn, and the absurdity of long lines. They both felt a connection but did not think they would run into each other again at such a large campus.

Later that week Spyro ran into Meg at the Student Union. She invited him to a memorial party to celebrate the life of the recently departed Steve Irwin. She said people might come dressed up in black. He heard people might come dressed up. He came dressed up as Steve Irwin. Her dog ate the eyes out of the stuffed frog that was part of his costume. He thought this was funny. They began dating shortly after.

The following summer Meg moved to Houston to work with Teach for America as a middle school science teacher. They spent a year in a long distance relationship, using up their cell phone minutes and flying to see each other when they could.

It was a hard, stressful year for both of them, but they made it through and Spyro moved down to Houston after graduating. He got a job as an art teacher and they spent the year together exploring the city and the world of teaching.

The following summer Spyro took Meg on a photo scavenger hunt throughout New York City. He wrote out clues that led her to different locations, and at the final destination (the boat pond in Central Park) he proposed. Her whole family had traveled to New York to meet them at a restaurant that night, completing a perfect day.
