Never visited New York before and would like a general sense of how to get around? A native who just needs directions to the party? Some help.

In and from Manhattan, either use public transit (see Hopstop, below), or just hail a cab. They're all required to accept credit cards and travel between all five boroughs (meaning they'll take you to Brooklyn).

Hopstop

Hopstop

Use this great site to find how to get from point A to point B in the city using public transportation or taxis--even showing you how to walk from the exit! It'll estimate the quickest route as well as how long the trip will take and the fare for a cab.

For the subways and buses, a one-way fare is $2. If you're going to make many trips during the weekend, consider getting either an unlimited card (available in daily increments) or taking advantage of one of the bonus deals offered on the Metrocard machines. You put a certain amount on a card, and get an additional percentage added as a free bonus.

Brooklyn car services

In Brooklyn, it's hard to hail a cab (possible, but sometimes difficult). Instead, try calling a car service. They can quote you a price over the phone, and will drive you door-to-door. Call one nearby for speedier service.
