For those gracious friends and family giving us gifts on our special day, we have narrowed your choices down to two viable options.
For those who prefer not to give from a registry (and we know everyone has their own preferences), we would like to request that you would consider giving traditional Chinese red envelopes 紅包. This is a symbolic gesture which shows the guest's intent for the bride and groom to start their marriage with hopes of prosperity. We will leave the actual amount to put in the envelope up to you. However, be aware that numbers in Chinese culture have heavy significance.
"Lucky" Numbers:
2 symbolizes the unity and bond of the couple, so $20, $200, etc would be fine.
6 symbolizes flow and sends the bride + groom best wishes for things to flow well in their marriage.
8 is the luckiest number b/c it sounds like the word "to prosper." #888 is extremely lucky.
9 sounds like longevity and the combination 98 is a super number which means "be prosperous forever."
"Unlucky" Numbers:
4 symbolizes death, so it would be inauspicious to put in $40 or $400, etc.
5 sounds like emptiness, so usually we would leave out the $50 bills unless there's more than one (like 2 adding up to $100 - that would be fine.)
7 can sometimes symbolize grief as it sounds like 'crying' in Mandarin.
Hope that helps! No matter what you give, we know that it is out of your sincere love toward us and we are humbled. Thanks for being in our lives and for wanting to shower us with blessing on our special day! ^_^
