Paul surprised Rebecca with a trip to Chicago for her birthday in order to see her favorite musical, Wicked. Even though she thought the proposal would happen in Chicago, she was caught off guard when she returned to St. Louis without a ring. Immediately upon their arrival in St. Louis, he took her to see the play "Bad Dates" at the Grandel Theater. He proposed on stage after the play (in front of everyone!) saying he "never wanted her to have a bad date the rest of her life". The theater gave the couple a dozen red roses, a bottle of champagne and 2 champagne flutes as a congratulatory gift. Paul was also able to sneak Rebecca's parents in so they could see the proposal in person.
