Mike and I go way back as we are only 14 months apart. I could not ask for a better person than him to be my best man. He's always followed me around when it comes to school as we have attended both University of California Irvine for our bachelors' degrees and San Diego State University for our masters' degrees. He is currently working on his Master's in Public Health degree and hopes to be done in 2011. We both got our love of sports from our dad and enjoy attending San Diego Chargers football games and watching other games on TV. Back in high school, he was a tri-sport student athlete as he was involved in wrestling, football and soccer. In band, he played the clarinet and for Jazz Band, he played the saxophone. I was his teammate on the football and soccer teams at Kinnick High School and at UCI, we participated in bowling and soccer for intramurals. We even won the intramural championship in both sports! He likes hanging out with his boys, snowboarding, and barbecuing. One day, he hopes to work in the Environmental Health field. Mike currently resides in San Diego, California.
I met my best friend Deplata my sophomore year at Kinnick High School in Japan. I was new to the area and came to Kinnick mid-school year. I believe we were in the same Biology, Geometry classes, and AP History together, but we never really talked until she saw me sitting alone on the bleachers one day and she quickly invited me to eat with her group during lunch. The rest is history...We are both avid writers, in fact, we both kept letters and notebooks reminiscent of our times that we shared in high school. She's seen the best and worst of me. If you don't know me too well, go to Deplata because she knows EVERYTHING about me! I love this girl. She will always be my homegirl for life!
Iish and I have known each other since our middle school days on Yokosuka Naval Base in Japan. My fondest memories of Iish are at the base arcade, perfecting aerial raves and playing Starcraft on dial-up. In our band classes, Iish and I both played the trombone so we always sat next to each other. We pretty much competed for 2nd chair every year since our other friend Kenji was always the best. For band, we played multiple years at Tokyo Disneyland, various Kanto Plains events, and at sports functions. Besides regular band classes, Iish and I were also in Jazz Band together and even soccer. Back in the day, he loved drifting with his Nissan on the Yokohama Bay Bridge. Currently Iish is happily married with his wife Yohko and resides in La Mesa, California. He is taking undergraduate prerequisite classes at Grossmont College and plans to transfer to the University of California San Diego in the near future. Iish loves to travel, especially to his old stomping grounds in Japan.
What can I say about this girl! We've been sisters forever. She knows my likes, dislikes, quirks, irks, loves, hates, and so on. We share the same fashion sense and we often borrow bags and accessories from each other. My sister is a very ambitious girl and she knows how to get what she wants! She recently graduated from University of California San Diego in Human Biology. She currently works for a bio tech company called Focus Synthesis and is enrolled in a post-graduate Clinical Laboratory Scientist program at University of California Irvine.
Arthur or Archie as he is better known as, is the third of four children in the Cura family. As the oldest son, he graduated from Mission Hills High School in San Marcos and is now at Palomar College. I have known Archie since the Cura family lived on Yokosuka Naval Base and like me, he is very laid back. The Cura family is very artistic and it shows with Archie as he is highly involved in the dance scene. Archie started his own dance crew at Mission Hills and they have performed at various competitions throughout San Diego County. Most recently, his crew Version 1 competed at the inaugural San Diego's Best Dance Crew competition at Carlsbad High School. They even shared the stage with MTV's own Team Millenia. He plans long term to be involved in dance as a performer and/or choreographer. Archie currently resides in San Marcos, California.
Jade is the youngest of three with the Manese brothers (Scott and Mike). Although she is the youngest, I can recall her being the smartest and an intellectual young lady. Jade and I often talk about what she's been up to with life, school, music, and dance. She's a very ambitious young girl and I know she'll do great in any future endeavors she pursues. I can't believe I've known her since she was four and now she's growing up to be a young woman!
I have known Gil since being introduced to him by his wonderful girlfriend Janice. Gil is known as a hard worker who always strives for the best. Gil is an aspiring chef who has attended culinary school and has been in charge of a branch of a certain Asian fast food restaurant. Whenever we have our formal get togethers, Gil is the head chef and has made several dishes including cream cheese filled wontons that Christine loves to death. At our most recent formal, he created a full four course menu. One of his primary goals includes opening a successful restaurant with Janice. When that restaurant becomes reality, Christine & I plan to be one of his regular customers. Gil currently resides in San Diego, California and hopes to get into the US Air Force soon.
I met Janice back when she was only 15 years old at Kinnick High School in Japan. Her and her brother were known in our school as musically talented as they choreographed their own dance in one of our talent shows, in fact, they won first place! What I love the most about Janice is her fun and carefree attitude towards life. She’s very chill, which is completely opposite of me. She loves entertaining others as it is shown through her contagious energy and smile. We also share a love of music, dance, and good food. There were times when I needed help and Janice has always been that type of person to help me focus on the positives. As our group coordinator, Janice always organizes our group events, which include our annual formals and Christmas parties. Currently, she is pursing a degree at San Diego State University in Foods and Nutrition and works for a local real estate company in San Diego.
Jeff and I go way back to our times in Japan. Jeff is known as the dancer and life of the party. He is always down to hit the clubs and dance the night away. This includes hitting up Roppongi for after prom in Tokyo, Japan. We both attended Nile C. Kinnick High School in Japan and he recently graduated from San Diego State University with his Bachelor's degree. Jeff has a love of board games so whenever we get together with a group of people, we know a board game will be involved. Jeff currently works as a manager at a local movie theater and hopes to one day be involved in media arts, utilizing his degree. Last summer, we traveled with Jeff & Donna and toured San Francisco. Jeff also proposed to his lovely fiancee Donna earlier this year and they have yet to set a wedding date. Jeff currently resides in San Diego, California.
I first met Donna back in 2003 at the Bali Hai Restaurant. My bff, Christine was in town visiting San Diego when I was introduced to Donna as Jeffry’s girlfriend. Ever since we’ve known each other, Donna has always been a great supporter of my career and educational endeavors; in fact, she is a very ambitious girl herself. Donna graduated from the University of California Irvine in Sociology with a minor in Education. She is now currently working as a Registered Nurse. What struck me the most about Donna’s personality is her ability to suspend judgment and listen to the issues that were occurring in my life. Often times when I was struggling in graduate school and life in general, I would call Donna. She is always the person who happily obliges to speak or meet up with me. Chosen as a bridesmaid, I know that she would be a great one because whenever I needed someone for advice and a venue to vent, she was always there lending a supportive hand. Plus, she could never turn down a double date at a nice restaurant with the four of us together (her, Jeff, me, Scott)!
Christine & I met Kevin after being introduced by Gil & Janice at a dinner party at the Ferrer residence. Kevin and Gil worked together in the food industry at a local restaurant in San Diego. Kevin ended his service with the US Army as a food inspector. Kevin is a die hard Dallas Cowboys fan, enjoys watching Mavericks games, and is a sports fan in general. We have played in numerous fantasy sports leagues online as well. Kevin is happily married and enjoys spending time with his wonderful wife Malinda. They are very strong in their faith and have already offered Christine & I some of their secrets to having a successful marriage. Kevin & Malinda currently reside in Dallas, Texas where Kevin is in culinary school fine tuning his cooking skills and works at a local Roy's Restaurant. Hopefully, they will be back in California sooner rather than later. We may be able to visit them later this year for our first visit to the Lone Star State.
I met Mona through our Palomar College days. Although I can't recall exactly how we met, we were always competitive from the start. We shared a few Psychology courses (Statistics and Research Methods) and we were often comparing answers we got to our questions. We competed a lot in college, which was evident through the grades we earned in our classes. Mona & I also attended Cal State San Marcos together as Human Development majors. Mona is an independent, ambitious, loyal, and caring woman who I highly respect and love. She's a big sweetheart and loves to take care of people. Mona and I also talk on the phone a lot exchanging stories and advice. Currently, Mona is working on her 2nd year of her Master's degree in Criminal Justice at University of Colorado at Denver, which is pretty impressive considering the fact that she's the first in her family to attend college.
Where do I begin. Geoff and I go back to our days at Ciudad dorm on the campus of the University of California Irvine. We were roommates for our freshman year and started classes together right after the tragedy of 9/11 in New York. We actually had a triple dorm so I slept on top portion of a bunk bed and he slept on the bottom while our other roommate Matt had the other bed. We have a lot in common as we both had the same major (Criminology, Law & Society) and both have lived in Japan. He was Westside as he is from Osaka, Japan while I was Eastside as I lived in Yokosuka, Japan. After our freshman year, we moved in with three other guys from our dorm for our final three years of undergrad into Amherst/Ambrose Court about 5 minutes from campus. Geoff is known as the do-it-yourself auto mechanic and computer game player. We also hit up Mitsuwa in Costa Mesa once in awhile and participated in various intramural sports during our time at UCI. We took a lot of the same classes and did research for two different professors. Currently, Geoff is employed with the Public Defender's Office in Washington D.C. and hopes to return to SoCal sooner rather than later.
An aspiring English/Literature professor at a university, Cathy has always been a dedicated and inspiring woman! Ever since meeting each other during our 10th grade at Kinnick High School, she has always been the studious one. What I love about Cathy is her carefree and positive attitude. She knows how to have a good time, while at the same, get down to business. Along with our other friend Sharon, she knew that Scott and I would eventually end up together, in fact, we still joke about it! Back in the days, we would often sing or duet together on the karaoke machine because everyone in our high school group knows us as the singers!
James and I go back to our days on Yokosuka Naval Base in Japan. Back in the day, he was really into the gaming scene and participated in numerous LAN parties and hit the arcade on a daily basis. At Kinnick High School, James showed off his trumpet skills performing with me at various functions for concert, marching and Jazz Band. James graduated the same year as me with a degree in Information & Computer Science at the University of California Irvine and currently is employed by a contractor that deals directly with Qualcomm. While at UCI, James and I were both Intramural Sports supervisors for soccer and with Mike, we won a couple intramural championships in bowling and soccer. James also lived in the same apartment complex as me for three years as he was on the third floor and I was on the first. James has even taught English in Japan and has visited Germany and Cuba. During his spare time, James can be seen crafting his own beer or hitting up the Gaslamp. Currently, James resides in San Diego, California.
I met Brooke through a mutual friend at a party about 2-3 years ago. After our initial meeting with her, she was applying makeup on me. Brooke is a fashionista, which is one of the reasons why we get along so great :) She's well aware of the latest fashion, makeup, and skin products. She's also very ambitious and knows what she wants, in fact, she wants to do everything - physician assistant, event planner, makeup, owning a big home, and being a loving woman! We love hanging out together and you can often see us hanging out at her place or at an upscale restaurant/dessert place. Brooke is very giving to others, as it is evident in her cooking/baking and her random acts of gift-giving. She's willing to go above and beyond to accommodate others.
Johnson, better known as JPOK is one cool guy. I have known him since early 2002 when he offered James and I positions as Intramural Sports officials at UCI. After getting to know him better and gaining his trust, he promoted us to supervisor status and the rest as they say is history. We became his go to people for soccer, ran several tournaments, and supervised officials at the ARC facilities. JPOK does not know this, but he gave me my first true job that was not an internship and lasted more than a couple months. JPOK treats everyone with respect and is one cool supervisor. As the Director of Intramural Sports at UCI, JPOK runs the show year round. He is a proud Florida State University alum and supports his 'Noles like no other. JPOK currently resides in Orange County, California and has family in Florida and Texas among other states.
I met Kat during our Kinnick days my senior year of high school. As told by many, she is one gorgeous chica. Everyone wanted to date her in high school and is often sought out by others till this day (I know she's going to tell me to delete this part). Kat is a sweetheart! She's willing to listen to others and gives me some real solid advice. She enjoys the finer things in life - good food, wine, and company. She's a well-traveled girl and has visited amazing places in the world with her family (Japan, Greece, Brazil, and Philippines to name a few).
I've known Maybelle ever since she was in elementary school. Her and my youngest brother, John, often play together during our family parties. Maybelle is very bright in school as one can see through her academics and grades. Active in church and in school, I can see Maybelle progress toward being a successful and bright young woman! Plus, she is the daughter of Maximo and Annabelle Limpin, two of my sponsors. I wish her nothing but the best in her future academic and career aspirations!
