On the surface Louisville is easy-going, simple to navigate and known for its world-famous horse race and classic whiskey. But it is also an industrial centre and a cultural hotbed, with its own ballet, theatre company and orchestra. Add to that some classic Americana and you're spoilt for choice.

With more than 120 attractions, many of them one-of-a-kind, Louisville has something for every age and interest. Discover the history of the city’s beginnings on the Ohio River, the traditions of the Kentucky Derby or the makings of the legendary Louisville Slugger. London’s Royal Armouries are on display at their only location outside of England, the Frazier International History Museum. Take time to explore the city’s nooks and crannies in neighborhoods like Old Louisville. Visit the “Urban Bourbon Trail,” where you can raise a glass at six of the world’s best-stocked and most-celebrated whiskey bars. Or take a short drive to one of Bourbon Country’s famous distilleries.

A mini attraction in its own right, the Louisville Visitors Information Center offers a full-time staff to assist visitors with answering questions, giving directions, passing out brochures and maps and selling Louisville merchandise. make reservations for dining and lodging, get directions, find information on public transportation and learn about the city’s history, arts, restaurants, attractions, neighborhoods, shopping and nightlife. Patrons can also print maps of the city from a touch-screen wall, send e-post cards from two kiosks, purchase attraction tickets and select souvenir items. Information is also supplied to foot traffic outside of the facility via a high-tech, video wall visible from the street that will run video on different cultural events and attractions.

Visitors Center:
The Louisville Visitors Center is open Monday - Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The visitors center will be closed on New Year's Day, Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

Louisville celebrates its lazily idyllic waterfront with a 7-mile RiverWalk along the shore. Visit Louisville's beautiful Waterfront Park, on the Ohio River. On the hallowed grounds of Churchill Downs, the surprisingly interesting Kentucky Derby Museum has displays on horses, jockeys and mint juleps, a 360-degree audiovisual on the race and a tour of the track. Photos, films, exhibits, and even a chance to sit on a saddle in a real starting gate. It's open year-round Monday through Saturday from 8am to 5pm, and Sunday from noon to 5pm. Admission is $9 for adults, $8 for seniors, and $4 for children ages 5 to 12; guided tours are available every half-hour.

Hillerich & Bradsby Co have been making their famous 'Louisville Slugger' baseball bats here since 1884. Look for the 120-foot baseball bat leaning against the building - ya can't miss it! Inside, you can see a bat used by Babe Ruth as well as miniature souvenir bats, and feel what it's like to stare down the stitches of a 90-mph fastball. You can take a guided tour of the factory and watch bats and mitts being crafted, watch a short film and take in a collection of baseball memorabilia. Offers fun for all ages! It's open Monday through Saturday from 9am to 5pm and Sunday noon to 5pm, with 90-minute tours of the factory every 20 minutes from 9am to 3:30pm. Admission is $9 for adults, $8 for seniors, $4 for children ages 6 to 12, and free for children 5 and under.

Two of the biggest distileries in the world offer a lot to do:

Jim Beam American Outpost - Come visit the world's largest bourbon distiller. Start your visit at the Outpost Theatre; there you can view the "First Family of Bourbon,"which details the Beam family's rise and influence as the number one producer in the world. Stroll around the grounds and visit the T. Jeremiah Beam home and sample a selection of the hand crafted Small Batch Bourbons. From the front porch be sure to look for the life size memorial to Booker and his beloved Jack Russell Terrier.

Heaven Hill Distilleries Bourbon Heritage Center: As you pass the second largest supply of Bourbon in the world, and enter the elegant white oak and limestone Center, you suddenly realize this is more than just another distillery tour.
